"I called Key Hole Locksmiths to get an estimate on what it would cost to open our Sentry safe. It has a keypad and the batteries were dead and we could not open it. After speaking with them he asked me the model information and a few more details and said he would research it and see if he could save me a service call. He called me back the next day and told me a way to get to the battery and change it. He said, "see if that works and call me back if you still need help". My husband was able to change the batteries which had corroded and the safe opened up! It was very nice of them to give us this information and save us the service call! You don't see many contractors willing to go out of their way to help you anymore. I will certainly use this locksmith next time I need something fixed and I will tell all my friends if they need a Locksmith to give Key Hole a call. Thank you so much for helping us out! 5 stars!!!"

"Whether it’s for your home or your business (I use them for both) one of the contractors you had better have complete trust in is your locksmith. We have been using Surefit Security for over thirty years and couldn't be happier with our experiences. They are extremely knowledgeable and have offered viable and prompt solutions addressing all of our locksmith needs. From replacing hardware and doors to developing and implementing new master key systems in high rise office buildings they have never let us down. The employees who come on site to perform work are professional and courteous and the office staff and owners are always available for consultation when needed. To say that I highly recommend them is an understatement. I really can’t see us ever using anyone else."

"Edis was extremely helpful! I had experienced a break-in a couple days earlier and he came right in and fixed the door frame/hinges until it worked and looked as good as new. He will definitely be hearing from me again."

"I called Alarm Protection Group AFTER my office was burglarized. Now I feel SAFE. William is great to work with. He's neat and tidy, prompt, presentable - not a butt-crack type of guy, and he doesn't leave a mess in his wake. He's also knowledgeable about the equipment and only uses high-quality products."

"Our dealings with Protect Your Home/ADT were delightful. We received a call back very fast after requesting a quote through Angie's List. We were able to complete everything on the phone; there was no paperwork or downtime. I had to call Customer Service with a question about the keypad, and they ended up telling me other helpful details on top of my original question."

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

Newer, electric-powered door locks generally have a life span of five years or less. That’s thanks, in large part, to a phenomenon called planned obsolescence, in which products are programmed to need replacing after a certain amount of time. That’s also why older, manual, push-key locksets can last up to 30 years with regular cleanings and maintenance. When it does come time for a new set-up, know that the cost to change locks ranges from $130 to $500 on average.

Using a combination of tools (often store-bought plumbing tools) and brute force, a burglar can easily snap the lock on a door. Snapping a lock aims to gain access to the cylinder inside, which holds the locking mechanism. Once the thief snaps the lock, they can pick the cylinder open and walk right in.

Lock picking is a relatively subtle method of unauthorized access, making it hard to detect. But there are telltale signs to look for. First, look for scratches or tool marks around the keyhole or the lock's surface. Also, check for loose or misaligned components, like a wonky strike plate, which could indicate tampering. Consulting a locksmith or security professional for an assessment can provide valuable insights, too. Investing in high-quality locks and considering additional security measures, like security cameras, can help deter potential intruders and enhance your overall safety.

Expect to pay between $50 to $200 if you hire a locksmith to change your locks. That figure includes labor and the cost of basic hardware. The cost will naturally be higher if you plan to install more expensive locks, like smart locks, and if you need a lot of them.

Homeowners can save money by replacing locks themselves. A typical rekeying kit costs about $10 to $25. The only additional cost is purchasing new house keys, and those are no more than a few dollars per key. If you want to replace the locks on your own completely, the main cost is the price of the locks themselves. A standard knob-style lock starts around $25, while electronic locks and smart locks will run in the hundreds of dollars. The only additional tools you should need are a tape measure, screwdriver, and screws if they are not already provided.

Yes, you should change the locks as soon as you can after completing the purchase of a house. This is a matter of privacy and security, as you have no idea how many copies of the keys the previous owner made. You can change the locks yourself or hire a pro to replace or rekey the lock, which costs $50 to $100.
