"Stay away from HomePros General Contracting, which also does business as HomeStory Doors. I paid in full for 2 sets of closet doors in August and was told the doors would arrive in 6-8 weeks. It has been more than 10 weeks and I don’t have new closet doors. I have called dozens of times and sent several emails but haven’t received a response."

We are District Developers LLC, formerly known as CEKAD General Contractors. We are committed to building long-term relationships with suppliers, subcontractors and customers based on integrity, performance and value. We continue to meet the changing needs of our clients with our quality services delivered by the most qualified people in the DC metro area. We are recognized by many Realtors and community members for our attention to detail, quality of work, affordable pricing, and professionalism. Our projects are always completed in a timely manner and yield high customer satisfaction.

"When we hired District Developers to paint the interior of our home 2 years ago, they were wonderful. Evelyn and Cristian Figueroa, the owners, were both on the job daily, both supervising their employees and working along with them. We hired them to paint the exterior of our home in July 2018. District Developers became very disorganized, and the 5 weeks it took to complete the job were extremely stressful and aggravating. The owners’ daily supervision of their employees had dwindled to only a couple of nonconsecutive days during the week, and only for less than an hour. When we wanted to discuss an issue with the owners, they promised to “be here the next day,” which never happened. When they did answer our questions, the explanations were often vague, and they never went into detail. Part of the job included power washing and repairing mortar/replacing any bricks on the house. They didn’t work smart re the power washing/scraping resulting in a big mess that took an extra day to clean. When repairing the chimney bricks, they caused cracks in the crown; they didn’t repair the cracks, and didn’t tell us of this issue. Heavy rains ensued after this, resulting in roof leaks. We know the leaks were not there previously, as we had our roofer repair all issues before the painting began. He also said there were absolutely no cracks in the aforesaid crown. So, now, this repair is an added expense. Another part of the job included repairing and staining the back fence. When I wanted a receipt for the new lumber for the fence repair, the owner simply said she didn’t know I wanted a receipt, didn’t have it, and “hoped I’d understand.” When they repaired/replaced any rotten lumber (which was done by the owner), he simply dropped the old nails all over the back driveway. This was discovered when another contractor tried to park his truck in the driveway. This caused more work having to clean up their mess, and hopefully, no one’s tire picked up a nail. After they started the job, we learned that they mislead us, and had subcontracted the job out to another painter. And, they gave the subcontractor little direction as to what we had discussed in the original contract. This company also offers a cleaning service, which we used for the last couple of years. Up until this summer, it worked out well. But, in July, it all fell apart. The owners left their 20 y/o and 15 y/o, alone and unsupervised in our home to clean. Our contractor was working in the house, and observed them eating/drinking soda in every room while cleaning. They were on their phones constantly. Their owner mother (who claimed she was here cleaning, but wasn’t), returned once during the afternoon to bring them lunch, then left. They were in our house for over 6 hours, and not every room was cleaned. We were beyond aggravated. Needless to say, we asked for our key, and will be looking for a new cleaning service. Do not employ District Developers. They are unprofessional and disorganized, and will leave you aggravated."

Roof Ice and Snow Removal questions, answered by experts

It is not advisable to use salt on your roof to prevent or remove ice dams. It’s not only mostly ineffective but can also cause serious damage to your roof itself. Salt can rust metal, damage masonry, pit shingles, and cause runoff that’s damaging to plants and animals.

Most roofs can take quite a bit of weight from snow, but their ability to handle heavy snow is not unlimited. Most roofs can handle about 20 pounds per cubic foot of fresh snow. Ice, ice dams, and other factors can contribute to dangerous roof weight. Newer roofs, sloped roofs, and those that have more support can hold more snow than older roofs, flat roofs, and roofs with widely spaced beams. To figure out how much snow your roof can hold, you will need to contact a professional roofing contractor to calculate the maximum snow load for your specific roof.

Snowblowers come in three different sizes: first-, second-, and third-stage blowers. Each additional stage is larger with higher intakes, more powerful, and has more gear options.

A first-stage blower, also called a snow thrower, is usually best for snow 6 to 8 inches or below. Electric snow blowers are usually only available in this size. If you regularly get snow that’s well above six inches, consider a second-stage snow blower. If snowstorms dump 2 to 3 feet of snow repeatedly during winter, you need a third-stage snow blower to tackle it.

When starting the engine, you typically leave the choke on a snowblower in the "choke" or "closed" position. After starting, let the engine run for a few minutes to warm up. Then, gradually open the choke, moving it to the "open" or "run" position, allowing more air into the engine and transitioning to a normal fuel-air mixture. The exact duration varies based on the snowblower model and ambient temperature, but as a general rule, you should open the choke once the engine has stabilized and runs smoothly, typically within a few minutes.

Yes, snow should be removed from a deck to protect it from damage caused by moisture and heavy loads. Shovel the snow off of your deck regularly once it is more than four inches deep. Avoid using salt, which can damage your deck.
