"Highly recommend Paul and his company; from the first time he came round to take a look at the premises, he was always fast and courteous in getting back to us, answer lots of questions and work with us on making this project as perfect as possible. You can pour concrete over asphalt if it’s in good condition, thick, stable, and well-compacted. Concrete is more durable than asphalt and can extend the lifetime of your driveway without having to pay frequent asphalt driveway repair costs or replace it completely. 

But this is best reserved as a temporary solution based on budget restraints, as asphalt requires more frequent repairs and assessments than concrete. Once that concrete top is poured, it’ll be harder to accurately understand what’s happening beneath that layer, which could lead to more issues.

You should place a layer of thick landscaping fabric directly over the concrete slab and then a thin layer of leveling sand over that to protect the pavers from moisture. For border pavers, you should plan on locking them in place with polyurethane adhesive. This will prevent them from shifting under foot traffic.

While water-related pressure caused by poor drainage is one common cause of paver cracking, other factors can include ground movement beneath pavers, heavy loads and wear and tear over the pavers, and climates with constant freeze-thaw cycles. In general, pavers should be resealed every three to five years to prevent cracking.

The best ways to increase the lifespan of your driveway are to carry out proper maintenance and get repairs done quickly. First, reseal your driveway every one to three years to protect it from the elements. If you start to notice significant cracks, hire a professional to diagnose the problem before it gets more serious. You can also use sand instead of salt when de-icing your driveway (since salt is corrosive) and clean your driveway annually using a pressure washer to keep it in tip-top shape.

If you're designing a new patio in an area with poor drainage, permeable pavers made from porous materials may help prevent water issues. Most permeable pavers feature a gravel-only aggregate base instead of a concrete base to allow water to flow through instead of getting trapped. While beneficial in some cases, permeable pavers come with higher initial costs and greater load-bearing limitations compared to traditional pavers.
