"Whites paving did a phenomenal job of paving a very old, torn up driveway on a steep hill. It was done on my timetable, they were very efficient, considerate, professional and did amazing work. He priced in as good or better than 3 other local competitors, Three neighbors in my community had their driveways done this year, and none were as high quality or thickly coated as the job Whites did. Cannot more highly recommend. Oh and left the job site immaculate."

"We are very pleased with the job that was done. We asked them to enlarge our driveway and repair the existing driveway. They showed up on time and finished the job in one day. There was a large crew of workers and they were friendly and efficient. We couldn't be more pleased with the job that they did. We highly recommend JD Asphalt. "They've done several projects for us - all commercial projects. They do a lot of big work for me. I'm a General Contractor - but, they even do small driveways (and other projects) very well. I've seen them pave - after they grade, they will even go out with a string & a line; so, you can actually the fall (slant) line: they don't only rely on the modern laser technology. They even paved my father's driveway, before he passed. They are great! They have all the modern equipment; yet, they have a great 'old-fashioned work ethic."

Paving Services questions, answered by experts

Whether you decide to DIY paver installation or want to hire a pro, it’s smart to understand the process. First, you’ll need to prepare the area by clearing away grass and dirt. Next, you’ll add the paver base of gravel and sand before laying the pavers on top. You may need to cut pavers to fit your space or the landscaping design and add edging stones.

The answer to whether or not you need to get a permit before you start your driveway can vary widely based on local ordinances and the scope of your driveway ideas. In most urban and suburban areas, a permit is needed before building a new driveway to ensure that a homeowner is using safe materials and proper drainage practices while designing and constructing a new driveway. In some rural areas, a homeowner may not be required to apply for a permit. When building a new driveway on your own, always check with your local building department to see if you need to request a permit. When hiring a driveway contractor, verify that the right permits are being used before driveway construction begins.

If you notice minor cosmetic problems with your driveway, you should seal it. Look out for cracks and holes on the surface, faded asphalt or concrete, and stains from oil and other chemicals. Replacing your driveway may be necessary if you’re dealing with significant problems—¼-inch cracks, large potholes, and puddles from drainage issues. The cost to install an asphalt driveway typically ranges between $4,200 and $9,000, significantly more than resealing. Consider talking to a professional to discuss whether resurfacing your driveway—a midway project between resealing and replacing—is a better option for you.

The ideal distance between stepping stones depends on your design preference. A general rule is to place them about 24 inches apart from center to center to match an average person's stride. Another common approach is to leave about 6 inches of space between the edges of each stone; this can be adjusted to fit the path's total length without cutting pavers. If you plan to plant between the stones, leave at least 6 to 8 inches of space to give the plants room to grow.

An asphalt driveway should be at least 3 inches thick over a compacted gravel base. Areas with poor drainage should have a thicker stone base. To install a new asphalt driveway over an existing driveway, the new asphalt should be at least 2 inches thick and the existing driveway should be in relatively good condition.
