Several years ago we had a leak and the problem was attributed to ice damming. When the problem appeared again late spring we called the contractor who had repaired it the first time, (and who had installed the roof when the house was built in 1995) who said their repairs were fine, but our 30 year roof on a 20 year house was old and needed to be replaced, soon. Great. Why buy a 30 roof then???
We called in Ruff because they had done a commercial job for a friend of ours. The first time they showed up, they found areas where water could have been seeping in. They fixed that, told us to watch after a heavy rain, and let them know if it helped. They said there was another place they saw, but didn' t think that was the issue. After a very heavy rain, the problem continued. We called, and they came out to fix the other little opening they had found. When we saw where they were on the roof, we surmised it wasn't coming from there. We asked John to come in, go up in the attic area toward where the problem was and check it out. He did, and found wet boards. He explained it wasn't a big deal - a nail could have come up over the years and left a small hole that got larger with rain and overwhelmed if the volume was high. He said they could do a patch and our roof would certainly last another 10 years, easy. The coordinator Amy, emailed me to get me on the schedule for the next week, but they came back the same day when their schedule had a break and fixed our roof. This company is HONEST, they are RELIABLE and they are FAIRLY PRICED. They did not try to gouge us like the company who did our original construction and subsequent ice damming did. Ruff listened to us and found the problem and fixed it professionally.
"Thank you for your review. We are very sorry that we were unable to resolve all the problems you were having with water infiltration due to poor workmanship by another contractor. We knew that might be the case, as we originally informed you and your builder that identifying the actual source of the water infiltration would involve removing and replacing a lot of the building envelope assemblies (most of which were not roof coverings), and that remedial repairs would not fix the leaks. At your request, we performed services on a time and material basis and explained that in doing so warranties would not be applicable. We also reduced our normal fees by 20% to ease the pain. We did our best to help correct the problems caused by others, and would have needed to do additional work, which you did not want to be charged for, to correct all the preexisting issues. Communication may have been poor between our salesman and the service technician, but in the years since your experience we have put in place multiple systems to avoid those miscommunications in the future. We take great pride in our customer service and reputation for quality workmanship."
During all of the above "repairs" not one person has gone up in my attic to check if they are working in the right area except for the guy who did the initial estimate.
Angieslist. Ryan Nagel came out to do the estimate immediately after I called. He said about 10 slates needed to be replaced and Ruff Roofers would do the job for $1,200.
-A few months later, I decided to go ahead and schedule this job. Ryan came right back out with a contract to replace 10 slates. He did not go up on a ladder to confirm this. Afterward, I went out and counted slates myself and saw that there were more than 10 that needed replacing. I contacted Ryan to ask how much it would cost to do up to 20 slates instead of 10. He said to add $750 to the original estimate and to just handwrite this change into the contract.
-A small crew from Ruff Roofers showed up to do the job about a week or so later. I had no warning and did not know they were coming. They did not seem to have a lot of slates in the back of their truck. I asked the guy how many he would be replacing and he said about 10. I contacted Ryan who assured me that they were prepared to do 20 slates and did not know why it looked like there were less than 20 slates in the truck.
-After the job was done, many broken slates were still visible. I emailed Ryan about this, but got no response. I then called the company to ask to speak with Ryan’s boss and was contacted the next day by Kevin Urbanski (Customer Service). Profuse apologies were given, but it took Kevin a while to come clean and admit that the first crew WAS only prepared to replace 10 slates and not
the 20 that was on the amended contract. He said he would send a new crew out right away to fix more slates – at least 20, but up to 30 if needed.
-The new crew came right away. Per Kevin, a total of 30 slates were replaced (at $50/slate over the original 20 I believe, but I haven’t
seen the final bill yet). Overall, the roof definitely looks a lot better, but I can still see a few broken slates. I emailed Kevin to ask him about this on 12/17. Ryan called back a day or two later to say that he’d swing by to take a look at it and would give me a call back. I never heard back from him.
-Summary:
Original estimate = $1,200 for 10 broken slates.
Final bill = about $2,500 for 30 broken slates and the roof still doesn’t look very good.
Overall, I’m not thrilled with Ruff Roofers for a number of reasons and I’ll be looking for another slate company the next time around.
The crew who did the actual work seemed to tackle the job like it was their own house. They were meticulous in protecting the plants and bushes around the house and they were constantly sweeping the lawn with a magnet to make sure no nails were left behind.
There was an error on the material and the roof had to be removed and replaced again. This was their error and I was not hasseled to accept the wrong color roof.
Only thing I am not satisfied with is the companies failure to honor my request for pictures of the completed job. I have no way of knowing that I have new guttergards. I also requested all cooper not reuses to be returned to me but they did not return it. I
"Hi member. We are glad that you are satisfied and thank you for the nice report."
