"It was an incredible experience. He does relining of chimneys. He was incredible. The fire box repair was like $2400 which was reasonable. I got several estimates and they were the most reasonable. Everything was done professionally. When they were finished there was no clean up. I'm a real estate agent so you know they've got to be good."

"Great Falls originally built a stone fireplace in my family room. I was so happy with the results that I had them do interior walls of entire man cave basement with carderock stone. Later they built a three-tiered stone patio with retaining walls. The quality of stone work is the best!"

"This has been a roller coaster ride for us, buying a one-level home and moving from a three-level townhouse, finding things that needed immediate attention, and moving forward with necessary repairs/remediation, all in less than three months. The cracked foundation wall, and settling of the structural slab, were by far the most daunting issues we faced. JES Foundation Repair responded to our call and did a free inspection of the foundation and slab. the rep, Mike Burgess, gave us a lot of information about the problem, the recommended remediation, and the estimated cost. We accepted the proposal, waited a long time for plan approval and permit issuance, then the work was done in a total of days. From start to finish, we were impressed by the committment to the task of everyone involved, the positive attitude AND courtesy of all the workers, and especially, the cleanup and restoration of the property afterward. We are in a 55+ community with an active HOA and property management, so cleanup was very important. I cannot praise the various teams enough for the way they went truly above and beyond to leave the area restored and attractive after the work was all done.. We strongly recommend JES Foundation Repair, if you care about work being done right the first time."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Mortar is a mixture of sand and cement that binds materials, such as bricks, stones, and concrete blocks, together. Think of it as the glue that fills in the gaps between bricks and stones, then seals them in place to prevent damage or deterioration. Mortar also helps spread the load across a wall or structure, keeping cracks and shifting at bay.

You will repoint over a fraction of the old mortar, but you should scrape away 1/2 to 1 inch of mortar from the joints before repointing. Otherwise, the repointing is only masking the weakened mortar instead of actually replacing it, which could put your chimney at risk of bigger, more expensive damages later on.

Spalling brick is not uncommon, but it does indicate a serious issue. It can be caused by water damage, an intense freeze-thaw cycle, or something else. Painted bricks can be susceptible to spalling, as the paint doesn’t allow the porous material of the brick to breathe, which can trap moisture. Spalling should always be addressed immediately before more serious structural damage occurs.

It is possible, albeit a lot slower, to break up a rock using water. You would do this by freezing and thawing the water. You could create some initial holes or cracks in the rock, then pour water into the cracks or holes and allow them to freeze (so it's best to do this in winter or in colder climates). Since water expands when it freezes, this puts pressure on the inside of the rock and causes it to crack. You could continue to pour more water in and let it freeze to continue to break up the rock.

The premise for painting a brick building is fairly simple: Prime the bricks to seal the surface and apply the top coat to protect your brick home. However, it’s easy to miss a few important steps if you’re starting from a raw brick surface and don’t know the basics of how to paint brick. So be sure to reach out to a local professional painter if you have any reservations about correctly painting your brick house.
