"Elite remodeling did an amazing job on my mother's DC home. They performed a complete interior and exterior remodel - all bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen, living and dining room, hardwood floors, front and back porch remodel. In addition, they installed all the appliances - kitchen and laundry appliances. They worked efficiently, professionally, and resolved any issues that were unknown to me. I would highly recommend them for any job- in particular in the DMV area. They are One stop shop - capable of resolving Plumbing, electrical, and carpentry and construction issues. They are professional and trustworthy. Once again, I highly, highly recommend them. Diane M. Benjamin (DC Home Owner)"

"We had a great experience with the Lux Renovations and Owens Corning team. The whole process was very easy from designing the space, selecting colors, and having a contract manager who organized the entire basement remodel including all the trades and inspections. We were sold on the Owens Corning materials for the basement and that they were engineered specifically for a basement space. Would highly recommend this team for your basement remodel needs."

"We are ecstatic about how our basement renovation turned out! When my husband and I met Chris in March 2021, he was very professional and knowledgeable about what it would for our project. The cost estimate he provided was reasonable and we were able to stay in budget. His team was polite and had good work ethic. Chris was very engaged in the entire project and kept us aware of progress and delays. In addition to the project, they included a few other items that really helped us (I.e., electrical socket in the front of house, cable wiring in the living room for better signaling throughout the house)They did great work and we will be using their services for future projects! We would highly recommend The North Star Companies!"

"I had two bathrooms remodeled and a small one built in the basement. I interviewed 4 prospects; Sam came, understood my vision, and was able to provide a great price. We discussed my vision thoroughly and Sam sent me to a couple of places that he worked with to find items I was interested in. I was able to find the materials I wanted to complete my project and then some. The workers were awesome. My lead installer was Daniel, he was more of a perfectionist than I was. He understood what I wanted and asked questions each step of the way. I loved working with Daniel and his partner 'little man'. My advice to home owners: First, know what you want. Take the time to have a vision, do not leave it all up to the contractor, especially if you are of different ethnicity, your vision will never be the same as the contractor. Second, if you can afford it, do some pre-shopping if you want specific items. One of the reasons Sam and I worked so well was because I purchased specific items I had envisioned in my bathroom. I did not leave everything up to the contractor/designer. Third, talk to the installers (workers) and Sam as the remodeling is going on. Each night take a moment to walk through the area and annotate what you do and don't like, no one is a mind reader nor can they catch everything. Forth and most important, if you receive a price, budget 10% - 15% more. Even on the HGTV shows the homeowner more often than not has to pay additional costs because you never know what will be uncovered during demo or what you will want as the renovation gets on the way. Build that buffer in, if you don't, then don't blame the contractor when the costs increases. Finally, if you have a specific taste and don't pre-shop then be prepared to see the cost rise. Take ownership of your project. In the end you will be more happy with the final outcome. I plan to use Sam again when I am ready to do the Kitchen. Wandra Arnold"

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

If you’re not sure which method of raising the ceiling is best for you, here are a couple of considerations to help you make that decision. A professional ceiling company will be able to help you determine the best option for your home.

  • How long you are planning to live there: although raising the basement ceiling will increase the value of your home, if you’re planning to sell the house, then go for raising the house.

  • The condition of the foundation: to lower the floors, your foundation has to be intact whereas raising the house will allow you to restore the damaged foundation.

Any bowing in a basement wall indicates a problem that needs to be addressed by a professional. If your basement wall bows more than 1 inch, it's time for an inspection. Generally, a wall can bow up to 30% of its thickness (around 2.5 inches for an 8-inch-thick wall) before it becomes an urgent situation. Bowing of 2 to 4 inches is more straightforward to fix than bowing of more than 4 inches, which will require significant repairs. If the bowing is more than 6 inches, the wall will likely need to be replaced. The sooner you address the problem, the easier and less expensive the repair will be.

While framing a basement is not as difficult as finishing a basement, it's something you should typically leave to the pros. That’s because if something is installed correctly, it will affect your entire basement. However, you can take care of some of the smaller tasks, like filling holes or putting up some insulation.

Create a checklist, reimagine the space use, set a realistic budget, choose materials and aesthetic details, and get professional support for guidelines and troubleshooting.

Building up by adding square footage to the top of your home is often less expensive than adding a basement, but it depends on the specifics of your house, your property, and supply costs. Because building a basement requires excavation, it can be a more expensive option than building up.
