"This was my first time using Charles. I found him to be very professional and a pleasure to work with. He came out to my location on a Monday to take a look at a 23-step handrail job and give me an estimate. We shook on the price and he said he could be done in a week. Charles contacted me on that Wednesday to ask if he could install it that day. He finished 90% of the job that day and came back the next day to finish and paint. I had been dreading calling someone about the rail for years and Charles knocked it out in 3 days. I promptly paid the man and look forward to working with him on any metal-work job I may have in the future. Very solid dude. Call him."

"Spectacular work! Walter knew exactly how to weld the materials for the strongest bond without any discoloration beyond the repair. He was timely, extremely professional and exceptionally courteous. I would hire him again without hesitation!"

"Working with Ace Mobile Welding was honestly shocking in the best way possible. They actually answered the phone, showed up when they said they would, and finished the job without disappearing for three business weeks. In construction terms, that’s basically a miracle. The quality of work was top tier. Everything was clean, solid, and done right the first time. You can tell these guys actually care about their craftsmanship instead of just hitting everything with spray paint and saying “she’ll hold.” The crew stayed professional, communicated clearly, and kept the work area organized the entire time. No chaos, no guessing games, and no one standing around pretending to look busy while holding a tape measure. Good people, honest work, and the kind of company you call again instead of warning your friends about. Definitely recommend Ace Mobile Welding to anyone who wants the job done right without the usual contractor headache."

"Vernon and the entire team at MC Fence did a remarkable job from beginning to end of our fence demo/install. I was amazed at how fast and efficient they worked and got everything done in 1 day! Vernon was also a dream salesman to work with as he was always there to answer any questions we had and is very prompt with his response time. I would absolutely recommend this company to family and friends!"

Welding questions, answered by experts

Professional metal fabricators typically charge around $70 per hour, but the total cost of your project will depend on several factors. The largest cost drivers are the size, complexity, and design of the project, as well as the price and type of metal used. A good way to estimate the total cost is to multiply the cost of raw materials by four; typically, one-quarter of the total goes toward materials and three-quarters toward labor. Your geographic location can also influence costs, as labor and material prices vary by region.

This all depends on the tools you have on hand and whether you’re trying to cut a straight line or shapes.

The best tool to use for straight lines is either a circular saw or table saw. When cutting shapes, a jigsaw will be the easiest and most precise tool to use.

Some welding projects, such as repairing pipes or fences, require travel, whereas others, like furniture repair, do not necessarily require the welder to come to you. Travel and overhead factor into the overall cost of your welding project. Some of the most common welding projects include:

  • Metal furniture repair: $35–$100

  • Pipe repair: $200–$1,000

  • Small gates: $550–$750

  • Fencing: $1,200–$1,800

  • Fabricated sheet metal welding: $750–$2,500

There are a few things you can ask welders before you hire them to get an idea of their experience and ability levels:

  • Are you licensed and certified?

  • How long have you been in the welding business?

  • Do you commonly do the type of welding I need?

  • Do you offer any kind of warranty for your work?

  • Do you charge by the hour or by the project?

  • How long do you expect my welding project to take?

  • What steps do you take to minimize errors in your work?

You should not do your own welding unless you have the proper training and experience. Most home electrical systems can only handle MIG welding, which creates weaker bonds than TIG welding and won’t work on certain metals or metal thicknesses. Both welding forms usually require the use of shielding gas, which can be dangerous to store at home. Additionally, welding machines create temperatures of over 3,000 degrees, and the sparks can blind you if you don’t have the proper equipment. As such, it’s usually better to hire a professional welder for your welding projects.
