"Very responsive to our request. Fair quote and work completed quickly and the work looks beautiful. They completed tile flooring and back splash for a basement wet bar. Very pleased with the quality of work and would definitely hire again."

"Mr. McCarthy was professional, made recommendations for proper fixtures for the room & existing wiring, as well as adding outlets where requested. Areas where he had to open up holes to add wiring for ceiling fans were patched & painted over so that they are totally invisible to someone who doesn't know where they are. He also repaired an amateur installation of TV cable, that was not only an eye sore, but dangerous, with exposed wiring. I would definitely recommend his work to anyone. He performed the work professionally, promptly & with a smile on his face."

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

Unless you have extensive experience in construction work, remodeling a basement is best left to a professional. There are several tasks associated with this project that require exact precision, including:

  • Replacing insulation

  • Replacing carpet or other flooring

  • Adding heating and cooling

  • Adjusting or adding walls and doors

  • Altering or adding plumbing elements

If any of these elements is done incorrectly, it could severely impact the quality of your basement remodel and be dangerous. Changing a basement often comes with code safety requirements, like egress windows and proper ventilation. Therefore, leaving it up to a professional is often the best decision.

Adding a bathroom to your basement can increase your home value since homes with multiple bathrooms sell for more. The return on investment (ROI) for a basement bathroom is 50% to 75%. The actual return varies with your home and location. Adding a half bath to your home increases the value by 2.9% while finishing a basement increases the home value by 6.6%.

Egress windows or doors are required in finished basements to meet safety and building codes. If your basement is unfinished and used as a storage space, egress windows are not required, but anything considered a habitable space must have an additional point of egress in addition to the stairs.

You can paint your ceiling or install a drywall ceiling if the ceiling is unfinished, as they take up less headroom than drop ceilings.

If there are pipes in the way of ceiling installation, you can do one of two things: reroute the pipes or adjust the installation to fit, which will cost extra.

Building up by adding square footage to the top of your home is often less expensive than adding a basement, but it depends on the specifics of your house, your property, and supply costs. Because building a basement requires excavation, it can be a more expensive option than building up.
