"We are extremely satisfied with the whole process of our house being insulated. First we had the walls done, and then a couple weeks later we had our attic insulated. The crew were so nice, friendly, and knowledgeable. We are very satisfied with everything. Thank you, everyone."

"I hired Atlas Home Energy Solutions to remove old insulation and replace it with the foam technique. However, I ran into numerous unexpected problems due to a slow leak from old pipes. It took awhile to sort out. Atlas Home Energy Solutions gave me lots of expert advice. They were willing to come out and review the situation. They were also willing to reschedule and wait until another contractor dealt with the water issue and its ensuing problems. They helped me make some difficult decisions before they could insulate the crawl space. When it was ready for them to come and insulate the area they bumped their schedule forward to get it done. This company did sterling work. Their expertise and professionalism were outstanding. They really know what they are doing and guided me through a more protracted process than originally envisioned. I would highly recommend them to anyone."

"I contacted Atlas not because of high energy bills but because of noticeable summertime temperature differences between the first and second floors. My home is 32 years old and had never had the ducts cleaned and I suspected there was leakage from seams in the duct work. While the house was built to the then current (1988) code levels, the code is now more stringent. For example, my attic insulation was R30 where code is now R50. Atlas first performed an energy audit. Based upon that outcome, they recommended: (1) rerouting the bathroom exhaust fans through the roof, (2) additional insulation in the attic bringing it to R50. (3) closed cell foam sealing in the main and garage attics where appropriate, (4) cleaning the heating/cooling ducts and (5) using the AeroSeal product in the same ducts. I opted for all of these services. The work was spread over 3 occasions, each no more than 2 days duration with most completed in a single day. Their friendly work crews were very attentive to my property, made sure to put down drop cloths throughout the house and generally made certain everything was clean upon leaving. They kept me informed throughout every task and showed/explained what they had encountered. My ducts certainly did need cleaning, even though it’s always been a smoke free home environment and without pets. The benefits of this work have been fantastic. The AeroSeal process yielded a 98% reduction in duct leakage. I can tell very little temperature difference between the first and second floors now. I’m expecting more noticeable improvements during the winter months. I strongly without reservation recommend Atlas Home Energy Solutions."

"Debbie showed up on time and seemed knowledgable about insulation. However she had a hard time answering my questions because she was overly fixated on price. That's not necessarily a bad thing but it got in the way of me really understanding the answers. When the quote came in it was very resonable but when i emailed with a follow-up question concerning warranties, the lack of record on Angies List (despite being in biz for 100+ yrs) and a sub-contractor she was going to use for an exhaust ventilation, she wouldn't put some of the answers in writing until after I committed to using her company. After reviewing all of the quotes we received we finally decided to take a leap of faith because she seemed knowledgable and the quote was fair. i emailed saying we wanted to move forward and asked if i could i now get the informatoin i requested in writing. Unfortunately it's now been 5 days so we are moving in another direction. I bet the company does quality work but it won't be with us.

"The work that Metro Insulation, LLC did was well done. The contractor was very kind. I was a new member of Angie's List at that time. I didn't really understand so much what the big deal was. It wasn't a very large break in the price, but it wasn't a tremendous amount of money so I was glad we did this. I would recommend the company. The insulation they installed did end up making our house warmer. The price was considerably more than what I expected it to be, but I really wanted to get this done so I didn't comparison shop. I would shop around more before making a decision whether I would use them again."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

While there are many different kinds of insulation, spray foam, blown-in, foam board, and batt and roll are the four types you’re most likely to see. That doesn’t mean they’re alike, though. Each one varies drastically in terms of cost, materials used, and how they’re installed—not to mention, how well they limit heat transfer.

You should not put fiberglass insulation in basements, since fiberglass is known to trap mold and mold is more commonly grown and produced in basements. You should also avoid placing insulation near water heaters, oil burners, or other hot appliances. For more information about the best and worst places to install insulation, consider hiring an insulation professional.

Durable materials suited for climate include aluminum for coastal areas or composite wood in varying environments for durability and minimal upkeep.

The most affordable way to insulate a garage involves choosing cost-effective materials like fiberglass, which comes in batts or rolls and is relatively easy to install. You can often install this type of insulation without needing to add drywall, which helps reduce costs. While a DIY approach might seem cheapest, hiring a professional installer can be highly cost-effective. Experts can accurately determine your garage's specific insulation needs and ensure the best results for your investment, often using batt insulation for the bulk of the project.

Mineral wool wraps are the most affordable and effective insulation for crawl space ducts. They are easy to cut, last for a long time, and healthier for humans. Meanwhile, fiberglass wraps are cheaper but more hazardous and difficult to handle. If you do choose to use a fiberglass wrap, make sure you are wearing long sleeves and wear proper protective gear.
