"This was an A+ professional service. They painted all of my walls in my condo which included multiple sites of wall repair, plastering and painting of walls that had not been maintained for over 30 years. They were always on time and worked very hard the entire day as arranged. I can't say enough about their expert work, on time schedule and especially quality of work. I can't imagine getting anyone better. They were dependable and they proved to be very expert at their work. I would hire them again anytime."

"Wilber and his painting crew arrived right on time to perform the job. All work was done in a timely manner and the crew exhibited outstanding professionalism in performing the work. In addition to painting the walls, ceiling and trim in one of our bedrooms and bathroom, they patched any imperfections in the walls and nail holes before they started to paint. After all painting work was complete, Wilber personally walked through all the rooms painted with me to assure I was satisfied. I couldn't be more satisfied with the job Wilber's crew did and I would definitely hire them again, as well as recommend them to others looking for a painter."

"I had a leaking water supply pipe in my home repaired, and now I needed to have it enclosed again as the original (wooden) box was removed during repair. I also needed the padding under the section of the carpet which had water damage replaced. I contacted Mr. Ramirez, and 40 minutes after the call he arrived at my home to give me a free estimate. We scheduled the work for the next week. His crew arrived on time and worked for three hours at a cost of $320. Their workmanship was exemplary, and I was very pleased with the result! I highly recommend Chapin Handyman for their professionalism and fair pricing. I had not used them before, and will now definately use them for any home improvement projects I may have in the future."

Wall Repair questions, answered by experts

Yes, to build a retaining wall, a permit is required. Similarly, any repairs or modifications to an existing retaining wall require permits. If the planned wall measures higher than 4 feet, most municipalities require designs and permits come through a licensed engineer. In some locations, if the wall is shorter than 4 feet, a permit may not be required. For the requirements in your area, contact your local government.

Failure to compact the soil during construction is the most common cause of leaning retaining walls. In addition, poor drainage can lead to excessive water pressure behind a retaining wall, pushing against it until it begins to move forward away from the soil it is holding back.

To maintain the integrity of your landscape, a retaining wall must be installed if the slope of the angle exceeds 35 degrees. The lean of the wall must be 1 inch per 12 inches in height to disperse the weight of the soil uniformly and guarantee the correct drainage of the soil.

A retaining wall can only function as a fence if it’s high enough on all sides to prevent someone from accidentally falling into the pool. However, most retaining walls retain dirt, which means their purpose is not related to safety. There would need to be nothing on the other side of the wall for it to be considered a fence, but in that case, it wouldn’t retain anything and would cease to be a retaining wall.

If you don’t backfill a retaining wall—either at all or adequately enough—the wall won’t drain well, and water will be able to pass through it. Poor drainage will lead to a warped wall or a buildup of hydrostatic pressure, which can eventually collapse your retaining wall. If you have particularly sloped land, consult a structural engineer to ensure your hardscaping is adding value to your home.
