"Manny from Service Master came twice. First time he came, assessed the problem and returned a few weeks later with the needed parts. But before installing them, he realized the problem may be with the valve feeding water to the fridge and not the fridge its self. Instead of charging me $500 for the parts and labor, he charged me $50 and encouraged me to get a plumber out to fix the valve. He suspected that would fix the problem, but if it didn't to call him again. I love the honesty and the willingness to admit his oversight and not make me pay for it. He clearly explained what he thought the issue was so I could explain it to a plumber. An honest and pleasent person. I would totally recommend Manny and Service Master again!"

Appliance Sales questions, answered by experts

Deciding whether to repair or replace a small appliance depends on its quality, age, and the cost of the repair. It is often more affordable to repair them, with an average repair cost of $150 versus a replacement cost of around $300. If you have a high-quality or top-of-the-line small appliance, it is almost always more cost-effective to repair it. However, a common guideline is to lean toward replacement if the repair cost is more than half the price of a new one. If the appliance is already nearing the end of its useful life, replacement might be the better long-term choice. A professional appliance technician can help you decide by estimating the appliance's remaining lifespan after the repair.

Regular servicing identifies potential issues early, minimizes downtime, and ensures appliances run efficiently, saving energy and extending their lifespan.

Whether or not it’s safe to use a buzzing microwave depends on what’s causing the noise. If a loose fastener or a dirty cooling fan is the underlying issue, it’s safe to use your microwave, although you may do damage to the fan motor if you don’t clean the blades first. If the issue is stemming from something else, you could do further damage to your appliance and potentially even start a house fire if you don’t repair it before continued use. If the microwave is buzzing when not in use, shut the power and call an emergency electrician, as this could lead to a fire.

Since there aren’t many moving parts to an oven, the list of repairs it might need is relatively short. Most times, when a repair is needed, it’s due to a part simply burning out. Some common oven repairs you might come across include:

  • Broken door glass

  • Stuck or broken ignitor

  • Stuck gas valve

  • Fractured heating element

  • Busted control board

While refinishing your appliances can make them look fresh, you may prefer to keep their original coatings as long as possible. The best way to maintain your appliances’ appearance is to keep them clean. You can do this by:

  • Wiping up messes and spills on appliances as soon as possible.

  • Avoid using harsh cleaners or abrasive cleaning tools.

  • Handling objects with care near appliances to avoid scratching or denting them.
