"Outdoor Advantage has done 2 jobs for us, one a small stone patio and the other a major front yard landscaping with digging out 2 large tree stumps, and then grading, planting, sod, and a small stone wall. They have just done a tremendous job in all respects, with timely service, great attention to detail, and coming back to fix some small things that made it perfect. Great job!! Will definitely use again, and recommend to all."

"G&G Landscaping did a phenomenal job in clearing poison ivy, weeds, and tree trimming. The landscapers were extremely nice and communicative. They were on time and well prepared. They also gave great advice for future projects and planting."

"Within a day or two of our inquiry, owner/manager Kyle Hodges was here to evaluate our problem and give an estimate for the work he discussed with us. Although we live in a townhouse, the record-breaking Maryland rainfall and the slant of the front lawn toward our foundation had caused serious water build up at our foundation and threat to overflow into the basement.. For several weeks we had been bailing rainwater round the clock from the trench that had formed at the front of our home and using dozens of paper towel rolls to absorb water. Kyle saw the seriousness of the problem, brought his co-worker Matt who would do the work to help plan their project and scheduled a date. Matt was excellent and very thorough. So far the work they did has solved the problem successfully, and we look forward to their return in the spring for more corrective landscaping. We recommend Azaleas To Zinnias most highly and appreciate Angie's List for helping us find such a conscientious, competent, and professional business."

"This is the third time we've had M.E.V. work on our property and we are exceedingly pleased with the work they have performed for us. The first time was for basic yard clean up and the second was for more yard work and for building and restoring garden beds. This last time was for the some tree trimming/removal and installation of a new patio at the base of our deck. Edgar listened to everything we wanted, offered helpful suggestions and made sure we were in agreement on the work to be done. The crew arrived on time, worked constantly throughout the two day project and the end result is stunning. They used quality materials and, when finished made sure that everything was cleaned up. We've recommended them to our neighbors and friends and will continue to do so. They are the only landscaper you will ever need, no matter the job!"

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

Xeriscaped lawns are far more varied than many gardeners initially assume. The often-pictured rocky and cacti-filled landscapes are just one option. Many wildflower-, herb-, and mulch-covered landscapes follow the same principles without straying too far from the lush and colorful landscapes we have come to know. In fact, there are numerous xeriscape ideas for customizing an energy-efficient lawn to your liking.

A window flower box should be deep enough that there’s room for a wide selection of plants and the required amount of soil and gravel. Standard flower boxes are 8 inches deep and 8 inches from front to back. Larger is better to increase the variety of plants in the box, but you could run into stability issues as it increases in weight.

A scattering of leaves won’t pose a problem through the winter, but a thicker layer of leaves may not decompose before the first frost and can instead weigh down your grass and harbor mold or fungi. A thick layer of leaves also cuts off light and air that grass needs to grow. That’s why we suggest removing thick leaf layers within several days if possible. If your lawn goes dormant over the winter and snow has already caught up with you, then remove the leaves in early spring before your grass-growing season starts so your lawn can thrive.

If you want to take your tree-planting hobby beyond your outdoor space, here are a few great ways to do it:

  • Encourage your neighbors to participate in the Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City USA program, which has a four-step framework that helps communities grow and maintain their own tree cover.

  • Support businesses that plant trees.

  • Lobby your local government to plant more trees around your community.

  • Donate to a tree-planting charity.

The average cost for landscaping is around $3,500, but prices can range from as low as $200 for simple DIY projects to $14,000 or more for extensive work. Several factors influence the final price, including your geographic location, yard size, project scope, chosen materials, site preparation, and the type of landscaping involved. Professional landscaper labor costs typically range from $50 to $100 per hour.

For a smaller budget, you can focus on softscaping projects like adding mulch, flowers, and shrubs, which might only cost a few hundred dollars if you do the work yourself. A budget of around $5,000 could cover projects like a simple patio, new plants and tree trimming, or a water feature. More extensive hardscaping projects, such as pergolas, patios, and walkways, can push the budget to $14,000 or more. For example, a flower bed installation averages between $800 and $3,000, while landscape lighting installation can cost from $2,000 to $6,000.
