"Luis and his team did outstanding work. They were very neat and clean during the construction. They also are very honest about anything. They poured a large concrete patio with a retaining wall and helped fix a drainage issue we had. They also had to make sure the concrete could hold our swim spa. It looks great and I won't call anyone else in the future. Couldn't be happier with the results."

Customers say: Quality work

"HL worked with us to design the patio we wanted and came up with some very good ideas that we adopted. They then installed it quickly with a crew that was extremely courteous and accommodating to us with regard to some final adjustments that we asked for during the installation. The result exceeded our expectations. We will likely hire HL again."

"Echoing other satisfied customers of Oscar's company, we too are extremely satisfied with their reconstruction of our 30+ year old slate patio. The job site was not particularly easy to access, but the crew handled it all with aplomb. Oscar and Douglas were readily available to answer any questions we had, and volunteered many points of information as the work was in process. The individual that performed the final re-installation of the slate tiles did so by himself, and his work in particular was impeccable. Also, his cleanup of the job site once the work was completed was exceptionally well done."

"They called and scheduled the estimate for our project the same day we reached out to them. They were quick to respond and quick to schedule the job. Very efficient. Removed our split rail fence and filled the holes where the posts were with dirt, raked the dirt over the fence row, seeded and put straw on top. Left the area vey neat. Would definitely hire again! Retaining Wall Installers questions, answered by experts

Depending on who you hire to build a retaining wall, the average cost, including demolition and reconstruction, for a 50-foot wall that's 4 feet in height is between $7,000 and $24,000.

DIY is possible for small projects. Professional installation ensures structural integrity and durability for larger walls.

Rebar is a steel support that goes inside concrete to prevent structural damage over time. Concrete is susceptible to impact, weight, and tension. By inserting rebar into the concrete during the installation, you can help extend its lifespan and avoid hazardous situations where the foundation of your home gives way to tensile forces.

A retaining wall can only function as a fence if it’s high enough on all sides to prevent someone from accidentally falling into the pool. However, most retaining walls retain dirt, which means their purpose is not related to safety. There would need to be nothing on the other side of the wall for it to be considered a fence, but in that case, it wouldn’t retain anything and would cease to be a retaining wall.

Railroad ties can be good for retaining walls, but it depends on the area. They have a desirable rustic look and are durable. The problem is they’re treated with creosote, a preservative the EPA says poses a risk to humans and wildlife. Over time, the preservative seeps out of the wood and into the ground. Many areas have banned the use of creosote-treated wood on residential properties. If your area does allow it, never use railroad ties near an edible garden or drinking water source. Instead, use wood that’s treated with an EPA-approved preservative or a wood-alternative composite material.
