I'm a fully licensed and insured contractor. I have been in building and construction for 20 years. I do all aspects of home repair and improvement. I offer free estimates that include a full description of the work discussed, as well as a cost breakdown and how payment is arranged. I accept cash, check, and money orders.

"Rick was fantastic! He worked around my schedule, made sure he had all the right materials, and did outstanding work at a very fair price. He also took great care to clean up afterwards and leave everywhere he worked looking just like he found it. He even took care of a couple other small “to-dos” unrelated to the job, which was a huge time and money saver! I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Rick to anyone and everyone, and I know I’ll 100% use him again for future projects. Thank you!"

Before joining Dr. Energy Saver, Jeremy spent his first years out of college pursing his writing craft. Later, he was introduced to the excitement of the home improvement industry and quickly became a leading sales producer for one of the Nation’s largest window replacement companies.

Doors questions, answered by experts

Look at the door from the outside, or the key side. If the hinges are on the left side of the door, it’s a left-hand swing. If the hinges are on the right side of the door, it’s a right-hand swing. You can also think of it as which hand you would most likely use to open the door from the outside when considering whether it’s a right-hand vs. left-hand door.

There are a few different reasons why shotgun houses have two separate front doors. Shotgun homes with two front doors are also called double shotgun homes, which can be two individual homes that share a wall. Other reasons include improved ventilation throughout the home and better access to other rooms.

Many doorways feature two door jambs. These are installed on both sides of a doorway to prevent the door from swinging too far. Door jambs usually stop the door at 180 degrees when closed.  A doorway floor transition sits between the door jambs on the floor, helping to create a safer and more aesthetically pleasing transition from one flooring type to the next.

Bifold doors are one of the most inexpensive interior door options. On average, the cost to install bifold doors ranges between $100 and $300. The door material will factor into the cost as well, with hollow core and solid core being on the lower end of the cost spectrum.

Most modern, standard doors are 1 ⅜-inches thick, so you should aim for this thickness unless you're building a door to replace an antique door or fit into a non-standard wall opening. Thickness varies when installing a pocket door or sliding barn door, so a good rule of thumb is to measure your existing door, if possible. For standard doors, you can also measure from the inside of the door to the door stop to gauge the proper thickness.
