"Jared did an amazing job and was very thorough in his work. He prepared the site work for a retaining wall behind a newly installed pool and the attention to details in where he placed the drainage was perfect. The following week we had a tremendous amount of rain and it kept all that water well away from the pool. Took a lot of pride in the work he did for us and can not wait to work with him again on our next project!"

Small jobs welcome

"Diego and his crew did a great job! This was a large 1,200 square foot patio area renovation that included a paver patio, pea gravel patio, grass (sod), cobblestones and a new privacy fence. I then hired him to mulch the property (20 yards). He came when he said he would, cleaned up and got the whole project done in a little over a week. Highly recommend!!"

"So I already had a quote and confirmed appointment from a local tree company, to do the job within 16 weeks. Well 20 weeks later still no contact from them. Got a couple quotes using Homeadvisor, went with Zacharias, did the job within a week... couple of trees down and pruning...on time, hard working, cleaned up area, fair price...totally worth the call if looking for tree work"

"I hired Matt to prepare a site for a shed we have ordered. He replied promptly for a request for an estimate. He explained what needed to be done and gave me a fixed date when he could do the work. Throughout the project, he kept me apprised of the progress and explained the choices that needed to be made. I was impressed with the care with which he approached every aspect of the project. Just a great guy to work with."

"Rob did an absolutely amazing job on our steps. He was quick in his response time and he came out and took care of the work and helped me with some other small issues with my porch as well. I will be using him again in the future and ensuring that if anyone asks for a pro that he is the one I recommend."

"AMD Masonry was hired to dig a trench and install piping and crushed rock to prevent further water damage to my basement. They did a fantastic job, were very professional and were very punctual. I could not have asked for a better job to be done. I will definitely hire them for any future projects I may have."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Because decomposed granite is a durable material, a crushed rock or gravel base is optional as long as the DG is properly installed and compacted. However, installing a base is a good idea because it will ensure proper drainage and stability and act as a weed suppressant (although you may still occasionally have to pull weeds). Installing an adequate base can also increase the durability of driveways and walkways. If you forego the paver base or gravel underneath, line the area with landscaping fabric to avoid weeds.

Professional installers often include a deep layer of crushed gravel under permeable pavers to allow more runoff to soak through into the soil below. Many installations will include multiple layers of gravel, with coarser aggregate at the base and finer aggregate that sits on top of that bottom layer. Above the gravel, you’ll often find coarse sand that helps reduce paver shifting over time. Some permeable paver designs include a water collection system set into the gravel layer to route runoff to a safe area for disposal.

You can dig 60 to 80 linear feet by hand per day depending on the depth. Digging a 100-foot trench by hand will take you two work days, but it can take longer if you have heavy or rocky soil. If you’re digging a deep trench or one that’s over 100 feet, consider renting a mechanical trencher, such as a walk-behind or ride-on, or calling a pro for help.

Yes, you can excavate in the winter, but it might make the job harder. Frozen ground is harder to dig, and snow or ice can make the work site more hazardous. A contractor may need special equipment and techniques, such as ground-thawing methods, to break through frozen soil. Although winter excavation is possible, it may take longer and be more costly than excavating during warmer months.

We recommend removing the stump, and grinding is a popular way to do it. You can also dig out small stumps or stumps that have fully decayed instead of grinding them. However, don’t try using acids or fire for killing a tree stump, which is a fire hazard and illegal in many areas.

Leaving the stump alone invites eventual problems, including attracting termites, mold, and fungi.
