Electrical questions, answered by experts

The cost to upgrade an electrical panel ranges from $1,200 to $2,000, depending on the type of electrical panel you need and the size of your home. Amperage plays a central role in determining the cost, so calculate your home’s electrical load before purchasing. For example, a 100-amp and 400-amp panel vary widely in cost.

Technically, as long as the knob-and-tube wiring is functional and deemed safe by a qualified inspector, it should be safe to buy a house with K&T wiring. The system must be at least 60 amps, but may still have trouble supporting modern household appliances and electronics. It’s also a good idea to have knob-and-tube wiring inspected by a licensed electrician every year or two to ensure that the system is working properly.

The answer depends on your needs and the availability of your current electrical panel. If you’re hoping to seriously up the power in your detached living space, you may also need to consider increasing the power of the amp your home runs on (from 100-amps to 200-amps, for example).

Often, your existing ceiling fan can accommodate adding a light fixture. The wiring is typically below the fan motor. If you’re adding a ceiling fan to where a light fixture used to be, ensure the electrical mounting box is rated for that use or retrofit one in the location. Not all types of ceiling fan mounting brackets support adding light fixtures.

Outlets with only two slots have no ground connection. That’s more common on very old outlets, which means it’s more likely the outlet won’t be polarized. You’ll have to closely examine the slots to see if there’s a size difference indicating polarization. Keep in mind outlets this old are usually out of code and should be replaced if you’re doing any electrical work.
