"The workers were/are excellent. They were efficient, timely and are professional brick layers & masons. They removed & disposed of old material, measured, layed bricks/stones, leveled, cut stone and removed & replaced landscaping. The quality of the work done is excellent. They answered all questions and showed me everything I was curious about (in ground sprinklers). It took a while to get my project done, but it was well worth the wait. My stairs/front walkway & retaining wall are beautiful !!!"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Address urgent masonry work immediately if you spot cracks in flood-prone foundation areas, loose chimney mortar, or sudden efflorescence. Hull experiences over 100 freeze-thaw cycles per winter, meaning open gaps expand rapidly. You can delay minor surface staining or hairline cracks under 1/8 inch on decorative structures until the next optimal season. Always prioritize essential repairs near the waterline to protect your home from coastal storm surges and high winds.

Helpful?

Completing timely masonry work provides immediate protection against nor'easters and coastal flooding. Repaired seawalls and sealed chimney crowns block water infiltration before the winter freeze. Over the long term, proper repairs extend the lifespan of your structures by decades in the harsh MA climate. Well-maintained brickwork boosts your property value, prevents extensive water damage, and improves energy efficiency by sealing out strong winds and reducing heat loss.

Helpful?

Inspect your property for crumbling mortar joints recessed more than a quarter inch, which indicate failing previous masonry work. Watch for reappearing white salt deposits, interior wall dampness, or rust stains from corroding metal ties. In the harsh Hull environment, improper materials cause brick spalling and recurring stair-step foundation cracks. Check your chimney for separated flashing or new crown cracks after a storm season, and hire a local professional for corrections.

Helpful?

Chimneys and foundation walls require the most frequent masonry work due to high winds and persistent moisture. Exterior steps, brick veneers, and retaining walls also deteriorate rapidly from direct salt air exposure and frost heave. Waterfront properties face intense tidal action and storm surges, making seawall maintenance an ongoing necessity. Inspect these vulnerable structures annually in Hull to catch joint failures and spalling early before structural damage occurs.

Helpful?

Start planning your masonry work by checking with the local building department, as structural repairs require permits. Work in coastal flood zones also requires review under the MA Wetlands Protection Act. Schedule projects between late May and mid-October for proper mortar curing temperatures above 40°F. Avoid the busy summer tourist season to ensure contractors have clear access on narrow peninsula roads, and always finish exposed projects before nor'easter season begins.
