However, it’s risky because the veneers on hollow core doors are so thin that sanding and restaining might cause damage to the doors. Installing a dog door into an existing door is a quicker, easier project than installing one in a wall. Installing a pet door into a wall requires cutting through your home’s drywall, ensuring no pipes or wires are cut, and sealing the new opening so as not to compromise the safety and stability of your home’s walls, all of which may be a bigger project than many homeowners are looking to undertake.

Longer screws can make a door more secure, but this isn’t a foolproof method for security. Replacing the short screws in your door’s strike plate with screws that are 3 inches long will make it much more difficult for an intruder to force entry by kicking down the door, but it won’t do anything to stop them from picking the lock. 

The best place to install a dog door is on an exterior door that leads to a fenced-in area of your rear yard. This position will let your dog go in and out as they need and still keep them safe in your yard when they’re outside. You should plan on installing the bottom of the doggie door a minimum of 3 inches above the bottom of your exterior door to maintain the structural integrity of the door, and never cut out a hole within 3 inches of exterior door glass.
