"Professional crew; work was done quickly, with minimal disruption and fairly good cleanup. The house is older and the crew chief took reviewed the interior carefully to insure there would be no damage to the walls in the insulation process."

"I was plagued with recurring ice dams in a few areas of my roof. After investigation, it was discovered that the insulation in a few visible areas was sub-par. Roland came in and quickly spotted the problem areas. He assured me that the could fix these problems immediately. He used a combination of rearranging existing batts, blown-in fiberglass and spray foam to seal the attic space, over the course of two visits. He's extremely personable and always called me back or answered the phone right away."

"I called these folks to get a quote on removing vermiculite from an attic. They were pleasant and prompt. They informed me about the Zonolite Attic Insulation Trust which can, provide significant reimbursement for the removal and took and sent in a sample to get tested to see if it qualified for reimbursement. All of this before I even got an estimate. When I asked them about some mold they were gracious enough to suggest I find a firm that could do both and suggested a contractor. In the end I didn't use these folks based on comparison quotes but based on their professionalism, honesty, and knowledge I'd highly recommend them to anybody that needs this kind of work."

"Tony arrived on time, was very efficient, did a great job of ensuring the door was sealed from the outside air and elements, did caulking, foam insulation, used primed wood, did fine finish work, spoke with my husband along the way to ensure the right decisions, and even rewired the new door for the alarm system. Everything looks great! I now just need to do finish painting work on the door casing (our door was prepainted). Tony's on the top of my list for our next carpentry job. Note: the cost of service does not include the door itself."

"John and Lisa were very professional and easy to work with. They were responsive to my questions and showed up to do the work when they said they would. When the building inspector stated that my fiberglass insulation would need to be replaced with spray insulation to be up to code, John took the time to go through code books and found an alternate solution saving me thousands of dollars! I couldn't be happier with the job they did and highly recommend them. I know they will be my first phone call for future projects."

"We have never had done work on this scale before, but from the horror stories we've heard from others, we know we were lucky to have found sustainable construction. Not only are they responsible, energetic, creative and excellent communicators, they are nice people and fun to work with."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

When temperatures are too cold, it can keep ice from melting, and products like ice melt and rock salt are ineffective. Water turns to ice in temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Ice melts on its own when temperatures reach above 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Ice melt loses effectiveness in temperatures below -25 degrees Fahrenheit, and rock salt works in temperatures 5 degrees Fahrenheit and warmer.

Once installed, injection insulation requires little maintenance, but periodic inspections for air leaks or moisture buildup are recommended.

Unfaced wall insulation is easier to cut and install, making it the better choice for a DIY project. It’s also more affordable. But if it’s unfaced, you’ll likely need to add a vapor barrier to reach your desired R-value and efficiency, as it doesn’t offer any moisture barrier.

Faced insulation uses paper or foil to create a built-in barrier and doesn’t require an extra step. It’s also more fire-resistant and safe. But it’s quite a bit more expensive and a little bit harder to work with as a DIYer.

High humidity, bad insulation, warmth from sunlight, and poor circulation are all reasons your home’s hotter inside than out. While this is what you want in the colder months, summer can become unbearable if this is a constant. Try to find the cause, but you need to remember that issues like this require a permanent fix (unless you want to bear down during the summer months).

The best R-value for home insulation depends on where you live and where you’re installing the insulation. Your climate zone plays the biggest role in determining the correct R-value, so be sure to know which zone you live in when determining the R-value you need.
