"We hired John Fougere after another recommended landscaper withdrew from the project at the planning stage. The lot of land is challenging with serious slopes. We had new construction going on, were new to Chatham, and didn't know who to rely on. We interviewed a few landscapers who made it sound like the task at hand was no big deal. John was the only one who advised he was interested but was honest about his upcoming schedule and noted he could work with us but we would have to be patient. We appreciated his honesty and hired him! Absolutely NO REGRETS! As promised, John tackled the job in stages and started with the areas that were most important to us. As our move in date approached, he concentrated on the things we needed to feel at home, like our patio and steps. John and his staff are professional, dedicated, talented, and most importantly, there is no doubt they take pride in their work. After conferring with us, John selected and planted trees and shrubs. He led his crew in creating two gorgeous patios, a front walkway and steps. He graded parts of the property as needed and added steps in sloped areas. He expertly installed an irrigation system and sod, and also mulched planting beds. I hope I have not forgotten anything. "I initially left a message for another company, but Bresnahan called back. They were prompt and after repairing the initial malfunctioning back flow preventers worked on other zone repairs. Early on I was quoted $95./hr for work + parts. I subsequently discussed wanting to see where the bill was and again went over the hrly rate, which was $95. per worker! I asked for an estimate on the remaining work but the owner said he couldn't do that and that his rates were in line with the industry. Take home message is get a full estimate before starting, since our project ballooned to $6,000. and is not done."

Not only are lawn depressions unsightly, they also cause your yard to be uneven and have divots, which can be a tripping hazard. Lawn depressions also make mowing more difficult and can potentially cause damage to your mower.

While dethatching first often makes the aeration process faster and easier, both actions can be done on the same day. Aeration can also loosen up the thatch, even if you have a harder time aerating the soil because the thatch got too thick. Because both dethatching and aeration have the common goal of making it easier for the soil to get water and nutrients, it’s safe and possible to do both at the same time.

One of the most effective ways to improve lawn absorption is to learn how to aerate your lawn. This is a process where you poke tiny holes all throughout it to break up tough soil and sediment, creating pathways for sunlight, water, air, and nutrients to seep into the plant’s roots. In turn, it promotes stronger root systems, making your lawn or plants less susceptible to pests and disease. Ideally, you’ll want to aerate your lawn at least once per year during the growing season—think late summer to early fall. 

Whether or not grass will fill in bare spots itself depends on the type of grass you have. For example, grass with rhizomes (e.g., Bermuda grass) and stolons (e.g., Saint Augustine grass) will naturally fill in bald spots as it spreads laterally. However, clump-forming grasses will not spread. 

To prepare your lawn for core aeration, water it the day before you aerate. (Alternatively, you can wait until it rains and aerate the following day.) Aerating after watering or a rainy day will make the process easier since you can penetrate moist soil better than dry soil. You should also flag your sprinklers so that you don’t accidentally hit them while aerating. If you have a lot of thatch buildup in your yard, you might need to dethatch your lawn before aerating as well.
