Animal Removal questions, answered by experts

In many places, killing bees or destroying a hive is discouraged or regulated due to their crucial role as pollinators. Specific laws vary by region, and certain bee species are protected due to declining populations. Some states require permits or restrict who can remove or exterminate bee colonies. Some species of bees (not to mention hornets) are aggressive and dangerous to have in your walls. If they swarm in anger or defense, they could badly hurt people in your home. Other species of bees are largely harmless and many people live in close proximity to them.

Either way, bees making hives in your walls usually causes damage. It can contribute to moisture problems, and attract other pests. Those problems get even worse if honeycombs build up. So we strongly suggest you find a way to keep bees from taking up permanent residence.

Any tree that emits a sap or resin can attract yellow jackets. They are particularly attracted to the tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima), which emits a sweet sap that both yellow jackets and spotted lanternflies love.

Some bees may return after the nest is removed. These are called "straggler" bees, and it may take them a couple of weeks before they leave. The reason is the nest may have been removed while the bees were away. These bees don't typically survive long once the nest is gone, so you may want to contact a beekeeper to help relocate them elsewhere.

Look for consistent buzzing sounds, visible hives, or increased bee activity around your property.
