"i am a tenant and my landlord just had a new roof put on my rental house. These roofers were super fast, completing the work in one day. They also did the best clean-up job! This is rare with contractors. Because I had to deal with a city inspector regarding smoke detectors, he even came inside and helped me install mine properly. What great service, and what a great business."

"We've had lots of contractors over the years, and none has been as responsive, punctual, and responsible as this crew. Gustavo took the time to explain the entire process, kept us updated on progress, and explained clearly that the previous deck support was not to code - and fixed that for what we're pretty sure was a lot less than others might have asked for in that situation. He also repurposed the old deck lumber to build us a nifty grill deck! This crew is a professional group and were a pleasure to have around our home. Extra credit for dealing with our pack of rescue dogs!"

"When we decided to redo our kitchen in April of 2012, we knew what we wanted fixed, our budget and that's about it. We started talking to contractors, kitchen design centers and researching ideas. We quickly realized we were in WAY over our heads. A lot of places offer free design services if you buy all of your materials through them. We didn't want to be tied down. We didn't want a complete tear down to the studs, either. Homemade Design to the rescue! First of all the price was an absolute steal for the service provided. Amanda and co. Listened to what we wanted and came up with inovative, functional and beautiful solutions. Our house is old. We wanted to keep that 1920s feel, but still have a dishwasher, granite countertops and stainless appliances! Amanda had the brilliant idea of only replacing the bottom cabinets. She also gave me excellent instructions on how to refinish my existing cabinets so they look like new. This was a perfect solution for US. Homemade Design gave us ideas for layout, cabinets, lighting, wall paint, appliances, furniture, countertops, backsplash, faucets, sink, and cusions for built in. She would have recommended flooring if we wanted, but we didn't. Now, Amanda is more like a consultant...( I actually called her my kitchen remodel therapist). You still are ultimately responsible for the plan and what works for you. If your measurements are off (like mine were) that's on you. I was adament about no island and no microwave over the stove and so she didn't put those in the design. Some suggestions were not my style. And I said so. Honestly, if I picked out my own kitchen it would be so safe: white subway tile or something. Amanda gave me the guts to mix patterns and create something spectacular! It took almost a year to complete ( contractors fault) We did a lot of work ourselves. We bought the cabinets, backsplash tile, light fixtures, table and banquette cusions through Homemade Design at a great discount, we checked!! If you try shopping for any part of your kitchen, the volume of choices can be overwhelming. We loved having Amanda narrow it down for us. Communication was through email, mostly. She never took longer than three business days to respond to my million questions or concerns. Awesome. 5 months later, my kitchen is a dream come true. And I owe it all to Homemade Design!

"YOU WANT THESE GUYS! We were looking for attractive, energy-efficient windows which matched the style of our home, and included a lifetime warranty, at fair price. We were also looking for a company which specialized in windows-not just a general contractor who can do windows as a side line. Allstate met all of our criteria and was professional from start to finish! Lou was very prompt in coming out to our home and he provided a wealth of information on windows. We had at first wanted aluminum windows but after he explained the pros and cons and all the options, we went with Vinyl. The installation was handled by Gerald, assisted by Chuck, and they were meticulous-and neat! The skill of installation is of extreme importance: windows are custom measured (Thanks, Donnie!) but there is still a lot of variance. You need a real pro to make the new windows fit perfectly into that old window opening. Our windows and doors look beautiful and we could not be happier!
PS: Lou later came out to check on our completed job. The windows are so nice that we ordered 3 more doors and 4 more windows for another area of the house!

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

When deciding if you should use 2x6 or 2x8 deck joists, consider the size of the deck, joist spacing, and materials. Larger decks, larger-spaced joists, and weaker wood all require more support, meaning they need larger joists. For example, 2x8 redwood joists spaced 16 inches apart can only safely span up to 10 feet and 7 inches. On the other hand, 2x10 southern pine joists spaced 12 inches apart can be as big as 16 feet and 2 inches. If you aren’t sure what size joist is best for your project, speak with your deck builder.

Professionals ensure precise alignment and durability, critical for structural integrity.

Stick frames, metal frames, or prefabricated concrete frames are included in framing a house, along with creating the framework and space for windows, doors, and entryways. Other aspects of developing a home—like drywall, insulation, windows, doors, and more—are not included in the cost to frame a house.

When hanging a door frame, it’s recommended that you use screws, not nails. Screws are more secure, easier to tighten, and easier to remove if you need to adjust the frame. On average, the cost to replace a door frame is about $400, but you can save on labor costs if you’re confident in your ability to DIY the project.

Framing a house with steel generally takes less time—around five to eight weeks—than most building materials. The steel components can also be made quickly off-site and manufactured with pre-punched holes for running piping and electrical wiring, which will lessen the prep work and extra labor during construction.
