"Jim provided a great system that is protecting our appliances. Previously, we were replacing our dish washer, washing machine, and shower hardware within three years. Since putting in this water system seven years ago, we have not replaced any appliances! Our water is drinkable! The reverse osmosis gives us water that is clean and good tasting. Also, we have noticed our skin and hair have moisture again and are free of hard, salty, and residual water!"

"These guys were VERY prompt to get a softener installed when my old one stopped working. The new Hague unit uses FAR less salt than my old one, which is great. We had one fitting leak on the pre-filter, which was due to a hairline crack on the housing. This was not their fault at all, but they came right out and replaced the entire unit at no charge. Great company!"

"Benjamin Franklin Plumbing is easy to work with. Because they are a premier company the cost of service is high but they do stand behind their service. I was concerned about the water heater anode since the water heater is 8 years old. The technician asked about the water coming from the water heater and smells or colorization of the hot water. It was decided the anode is fine at this time. Due to my flushing the water heater every 6 months that probably will extend the life of the anode. The technician, whose name was Jacob, asked about any other plumbing issues I knew about that might needed attention. I was given estimates for making the needed repairs by email in the early afternoon. They do good work but expect that it will cost more than some plumbing companies."

"They were able to get the Replacement Water Pressure Tank Quickly and do the Installation within the hour. Warned me about the frozen water pipe from pump, as the -8 degree had affected the line. A few days later I turned the pump on, and water was flowing with great relief. Larry DeLuca"

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

Routine maintenance involves recharging the resin bed with salt or potassium, cleaning components, and periodic inspection.

No. You should never directly drain a water softener into a sewer cleanout. This practice is illegal in many areas because it could allow raw sewage to get into your drinking water and make you seriously ill. Many places have codes requiring a specific seal, pipe, and a large air gap between a water softener and a sewage cleanout. Check out Florida's Plumbing Building Code as an example of what these restrictions might look like.

Some shower water softeners are effective, but this isn’t always the case. Most shower filters only filter out chlorine, not hard minerals like calcium. Other shower filters can't handle the demand in homes with very hard water. It's also important to change the filters on your shower filters. Failure to regularly swap out old filters will make the filter ineffective over time.

Experts recommend that you put two to four bags of potassium chloride in your water softener every month. This amount depends on how much is in the bag (40 pounds is most common) and what your water softener manufacturer recommends. For more specific advice, talk to a water softener pro in your area and read the manual that came with your system.

Soft water is better for your hair. The minerals in hard water can dry out hair, make it brittle, and leave a film on the hair and scalp that may cause irritation. Hard water also doesn't rinse out shampoo and conditioner effectively, which can lead to product buildup that makes hair look dull and limp. You may also find you need to use more shampoo to get a good lather in hard water.
