"I hired IDC to finish approximately 600 square feet of living space in my basement including a bedroom/office, full bathroom and entertainment/home theater room. Larry and the crew did a great job on the basement and treated my home well. It was his first job in Johnson County, KS, and he went through the steps to get his contractors license in this county, learn the code, pull necessary permits and build to code. There were no findings in any of the three city inspections and the inspector was very complimentary of the work that was performed. IDC was responsive to changes along the way, always kept us informed, and answered all of my many, many questions! The job did take longer than initially planned but there were some weather related delays that contributed. Larry runs a small crew and they had to drive from Lawrence to Olathe each day so that ate into the time. The crew was fun to work with and in the end our vision was brought to life. Many thanks to Larry and the IDC team for a job well done!"

"I hired this company to do deck repair not knowing whether it could be repaired or needed to be totally replaced. Nick and Joseph did an amazing job in blistering heat. Both very personable and willing to answer all my questions. The owner, Mark Kowertz, was very professional and gave me options/suggestions regarding condition of my deck and what could be saved and what needed to be replaced. Very reasonable in pricing. I have already recommended them to two other folks. You would not be wrong in giving them a call. I would highly recommend them."

"Found Sentri on Angi. Jeanette and Violet were very pleasant and efficient in getting a contractor to me in the time frame needed. The contractor was excellent and the roof looks great! I would definitely work with them again if I had additional projects."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.

Framing most homes takes anywhere between five and eight weeks to complete. You’ll need to account for inclement weather conditions, material shipment times, the number of crew members, and the weight of your materials. If the weather is too hot, wet, or cold for the installation, this process could take closer to eight weeks.

You may need a permit to install your window seat. Even though it's an indoor modification, some municipalities require permits for any built-ins added to homes. Check with your carpenter or, if you're DIY-ing, do some research on your city's requirements.

It's possible to turn your carport into a living space, but there are additional factors to address over turning it into a garage. HVAC, plumbing, and electricity won't be optional, and you'll need finished flooring, drywall, trim work, and legal ceiling height, for starters. Also, keep in mind that living space conversions may require upgrading the foundation underneath, and the permits might be more expensive as well.

Traditionally, bungalows are single-story homes, although having a half or partial story on top of the first floor is common. While adding a second story to a bungalow is certainly possible, the home would no longer be considered a bungalow by the strictest definition.
