"We had the trim done throughout our downstairs, and I honestly can?t believe what a difference it made. They were so easy to work with professional, respectful of our home, and knocked everything out much quicker than I expected. They really listened to what I wanted, paid attention to the little details, and the finished product turned out even better than I had pictured. It completely transformed the space and made our downstairs feel so much more finished and put together. If you?re thinking about having trim work done, I can?t recommend them enough. We?re so happy with how everything turned out!"

"I can’t recommend Chad highly enough. He’s done several projects for me so far: replacing my exterior French door frame with brick molding, installing a new interior window sill, and adding drip edge/smart siding trim around the exterior of the house. Every job was done with care, skill, and attention to detail. He communicated clearly the whole way through, explained what needed to be done, and made sure I understood the plan before he got started. And he left everything clean when the work was finished, which says a lot about his professionalism. Beyond doing great work, he’s just a great person. Honest, dependable, and someone I fully trust in my home. I’ll absolutely be hiring him again for future projects."

"Ian was very fast in response and addressed all of my needs. He cleaned all of the leaves out of the yard and landscaping, cleaned my gutters and added new mulch to all of the areas around the house. I searched on Monday on HomeAdvisors, hired him on Tuesday. He did the leaves and gutters Tuesday and mulch Wednesday. Communication, pricing and customer service were all on point. His crew was nice and worked hard. I am going to hire Ian in the spring for more cleanup and landscaping."

"Got a call back in short order, he was in the area and was able to stop by. Not only did he get my flat tire on my riding lawnmower fixed, he talked me through it so I can do it myself next time. Very reasonably priced. Would call him again!"

"They were recommended to us. Our 1/2-bath remodel was done in 2022. Watch what you pay. While their work was great, our 1-week project turned into 3 weeks plus without discussing it with us. He handed us a bill for $2,400.00 more than he bid, which we agreed to. His excuse was that it took longer to do some things than he expected. Not our problem. He kept saying no big deal and how long he had been doing this, so he should have known how long it would take to do things. We clearly outlined in writing what needed to be done. We discussed everything. We pointed out the termite damage, so he knew about that. He knew he'd have to build out the walls to put in a shelf. He threw away a wax ring for the toilet, then spent half a day driving around trying to find one that worked. His son would not show sometimes, so he said it took him longer because he needed his son help. Several days he did not show because he worked on another job. There were no hidden surprises on our end. We did not ask for additional things to be done. We stuck to our list. We bought the tile, shower base, shower door, shower head [and raised it up], new vent/light, and toilet. All they had to do was tear out the old, install the new in a half bath, and get any supplies he needed to do the job. His bid was $6,400.00, but we ended up paying $9,561.70 [$921.70 was tools and materials]. He charged us for an extra 14 hours at $160.00 per hour. His last day, he walked in and handed me a bill with the additional amount. What if we did not have that extra money? Why did he not tell us ahead of time that it was going to cost more? He just acted like it was no big deal; it was more than he bid, and we should have no problem paying the additional amount, which again, we were not made aware of and did not agree on. Of course I paid it, then kicked myself later. We should have paid what he bid, and if he wanted the rest, told him to take us to court."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Removing a load-bearing wall affects the structural integrity of your home, so you’ll need a permit before starting the work. Building codes vary by municipality, and obtaining a permit and having the work inspected after completion will ensure you’re in compliance with all applicable regulations.

The primary parts of a house that need framing during construction are floors, exterior walls, interior walls, and the roof. The framing in these areas provides the skeleton for adding other materials over the top. With walls, for example, contractors can hang drywall over the interior walls and siding over the outside of the exterior walls. Proper framing ensures a sturdy house that is built to last.

When deciding if you should use 2x6 or 2x8 deck joists, consider the size of the deck, joist spacing, and materials. Larger decks, larger-spaced joists, and weaker wood all require more support, meaning they need larger joists. For example, 2x8 redwood joists spaced 16 inches apart can only safely span up to 10 feet and 7 inches. On the other hand, 2x10 southern pine joists spaced 12 inches apart can be as big as 16 feet and 2 inches. If you aren’t sure what size joist is best for your project, speak with your deck builder.

New builds, remodels, and additions often necessitate professional framing expertise.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.
