Spiral staircases can be safe for all ages if designed with features such as code-compliant handrails, non-slip treads, and proper spacing. However, narrow treads and steep angles may pose challenges and a safety hazard for young children or those with mobility issues, so consider safety upgrades or alternative designs if needed.

It depends on whether you’re looking at residential or commercial buildings. For residential buildings, the 2018 International Residential Code asks for a maximum riser (or rise) height of 7 3/4 inches and a minimum tread depth (or run) of 10 inches.

For fixed stairs in commercial buildings, OSHA requires a rise between 6 and 7.5 inches, with a run between 10 and 14 inches. The standards are different for spiral staircases.

To child- or pet-proof your deck railing, look for railing systems with narrow spacing—under 4 inches—between balusters or panels. For added safety, consider installing a clear acrylic or mesh guard along the inside of the railing to prevent small limbs or paws from slipping through. Avoid horizontal rails that adventurous kids can climb like ladders. You can also add self-closing gates at stair openings to limit access.

The best way to ensure safe stairs is to make sure they’re clean and in good condition. If you want to increase their safety, make sure your railings are in good condition, and if your stairs are wood, make sure the material is taken care of. Many people find carpeted stairs much safer due to the reduced chance of slipping, which we agree with.

Building exterior porch steps requires wood or material that can handle exposure to the outdoor elements. Use pressure-treated lumber for the stringers and pressure-treated cedar, outdoor-rated wood, or composite decking material for the rest of the structure.
