"DO NOT HIRE THIS MAN. He took our deposit money and never painted an inch of our home. My wife and I are still sick about it. Justin took over $1500 from me and deposited it in good faith, accepting a job to paint the exterior of my home. Half way through the pressure washing on day one, he quit and walked off the job. Justin assured me I would receive my full deposit back. Two weeks later -- after I had to ask him for my money back -- he sends me a bill for exactly HALF of the deposit. No discussion. Justin just took our money and ran. Save yourself a trip to small claims court, and find someone else to do your painting – ANYONE else."

Roof Ice and Snow Removal questions, answered by experts

Some commercial services use sand when clearing ice, but that’s to add instant traction, not to melt the ice. While you can scatter kitty litter, sand, or similar substances on steps, paths, or porches to improve safety during icy conditions, they won’t help melt hardened ice. Rely on salt or other de-icing methods to fully melt away stubborn ice.

That depends on the size of your snow blower and how efficiently it uses fuel. Most snow blowers will last between 1 and 2 hours on a full tank of gas. Larger blowers tend to use fuel more quickly and need refilling more often.

Keep in mind, the average snow blowing project for a home driveway takes around 30 minutes. Large driveways and yards will take around an hour. A full tank of gas should be more than enough for snow removal, although the height of the snowfall will have an effect, too.

When starting the engine, you typically leave the choke on a snowblower in the "choke" or "closed" position. After starting, let the engine run for a few minutes to warm up. Then, gradually open the choke, moving it to the "open" or "run" position, allowing more air into the engine and transitioning to a normal fuel-air mixture. The exact duration varies based on the snowblower model and ambient temperature, but as a general rule, you should open the choke once the engine has stabilized and runs smoothly, typically within a few minutes.

If a big freeze catches you by surprise and you don’t have any deicer to hand, you can reduce the chance of taking a tumble by laying gritty, anti-slip materials. Some natural, readily-available options that don’t melt ice but offer traction underfoot include sand, wood shavings, kitty litter, and fireplace ash.

Whether or not an annual snow removal contract is worth it depends mainly on location. If you live in an area with frequent heavy snowfall, a yearly contract could be better than paying per clearing. If you live in an area where it only snows a few times a year, paying per snowstorm may be a better option.
