Fence repairs excellent!
New Fence Installation excellent!
I would call this person again.
Again, because the work was so good, we increased the job again to replace more decking.
The finished product is amazing. We could not be happier.
Furthermore, all along the process, he cleaned up the mess and kept all the tools and supplies within the work area. We have frequently had workers who leave stuff all over. Martin's kept the rest of our yard free of debris.
My husband is an engineer and knows lots about construction. He is very impressed with Mike's work and ability to solve problems.
The quote was fixed price, and exactly as promised.
"Ty [Member name removed] for the review, but I just wanted to add what all was done. New siding on garage, cottage, & home. New windows in cottage. 4 large windows in house. Removed siding on all 3 buildings. Installed structural rock around cabin door, back door on house and along bottom of window. Rocked back wall below deck with stone. Tucked pointed huge fireplace chimney outside. And a little electric. 34 squares of siding & 4 squares of rock. I admit that I had trouble with help on the job (seems to be 'normal' anymore) I enjoyed working for [Member name removed]. Thanks"
I could not have been more pleased with Mike's work. This is the second major project I have used him for--the first was constructing an enclosed 10' x 17' sunroom/porch--and both projects exceeded my expectations for quality of workmanship at a reasonable, affordable cost.
The small solarium that needed replacement had been installed from a kit when the home was built. The first estimate to replace exactly what was there, although reasonable, was simply more than I could afford. So Mike and I worked together to create a new design--for less than half the initial cost estimate!--and I actually love the new addition even more than I did before! It's much higher quality than the solarium was, and has taken that area from a pretty-but-useless space to a beautiful, functional seating area! I absolutely LOVE it!
MIke is honest; he says what he does and does what he says. He stays within the cost and timeframe he promised; cleans up his mess daily; has courteous helpers, and even brought treats for my dogs every day. I highly recommend him.
I paid him in full just to get him out of my house. Luckily I checked before using the shower as there were 3 leaks. He used an old used brass fitting at the shower arm and the fitting at the valve was actually missing internal parts and the oring was split. Replaced all the shower plumbing. He is very rough and kicks and beats things into place and man handles everything. He spends longer trying to figure out how to get around doing things the right way than it would take to do it the right way. It doesn't have to be done right if it is going to be covered up.He borrowed several of my tools, broke or damaged them and did not tell me. Broke my ladder by standing on the paint tray. Did not tell me. Used every surface available as a work bench resulting in scratched up toilet lid, scratched granite on the vanity, flower pot on the front porch with tile and wood and drywall pieces, etc. Used my buckets because they were handy, did not ask. They were my paint mixing buckets but, now they are trash buckets. Used my new stainless kitchen sink to wash tools with thinset, drywall mud, grout, etc.,instead of the basement facilities. Used my loveseat as dirty coat and tool storage and there is a tiny hole in the side of the leather. Leaned on my dishwasher to tell a story with tools in his back pocket and scratched it up by the handle. He threw and tossed tools with total disregard and was totally clueless as how to treat peoples houses. He did cover the floors with blankets but still managed to get water and drywall mud all over my kitchen floors and cabinets. He is a bull in a china shop. He chipped the toilet, scratched up the vanity mirror, chipped the paint off of vanity and closet by kicking with boots, etc. I have pvc glue and primer everywhere. He did not have reliable help, probably, because he treated them like crap! When he did have help, they were not dressed to work. ie:lightweight loafers, leather jacket. I am attaching pics (if I can figure out how) to back up this review. I could go on but, I am only allowed so many words in this reveiw and just thinking about this hot mess is exhausting.
"I wasn't for sure how to reply this. First it was obvious that the client didn't want a contractor; she wanted a crew working for her. She told me right off that she wasn't a normal homeowner, and she knew everything. She was over our shoulders the whole time and we were told at times not to install anything unless she was there. No I didn't watch her video...I had install units like this maybe 15 times and know how to install it. A corner of the flange was broken but the water channels as it should. The drain for the stool was moved so many time because she wanted the stool moved so the door would open. She hand a 30" vanity and I told her we could move it over 3". Then she bought a 32" vanity and things didn't fit now. She also got a strange toilet with a overly large handle on it. At this point there was nothing I could do. I have done much plumbing before as in other reviews and have had no problems. She wanted a new door put in. The house is a prefab and has narrow walls and we decided to just put in a new door. Door was mortised for hinges. And of course they didn't match old hinge cut out on doors. So you re-cut jamb and fill with putty where needed. There wasn't much caulking that I did. The tub took none, the vanity top was put in by some one else and they caulked it. Vanity was 4 legged.I did caulk trim and bottom of tub (which was last thing I did and I just wanted out of there) The closet was paneled and we hand to take some trim off and remove piece of paneling to put in floor. I put back the trim that was on it, put up the shelf strips and put the selves in before I left. The door was cut off also and opened other then the toilet thing. As far as any of the plumbing went..in was done fine...there WERE NO LEAKS in drains or water. Once again check the other 40 reviews. I cover everything with pads, floor, tub, vanity, toilet..and I do things as they should be done. I redid the ceramic floor twice (took up and put down) She still didn't like so she supervised the next time of putting them down...and then still replaced some. Don't know about her set stool...I had my ladders there. And if there was a huge scratches in her tub..from what one can see...she would have never paid me in full. There was a pad on her vanity the whole time after it was installed. So if it was scratched...it was doing installation. The grout on the wall looks like it had water on it before sealer was dry. And what my help wears or how I run my crew isn't anyone's business. As for the electric... She had to ask me how to get the wire to the lights & ect...and ran the wire. She is a retired union electrician, put said she only did commercial work and didn't know how to do residential. I have to admit we butted heads early on and patience was thin. Really sorry she feels as she does but I don't believe anyone could please her. All I can say is check my other reviews. Thanks."
"Not for sure what this is...when job was done; clients said it looked OK and they liked it. Now, 9 months later; by phone, then this response? Guess I'm confused on this. Sry."
Late February/early March 2013 we invited Mike Martin in to discuss his taking the job because his quote was reasonable and he had done work in the area. In the interview I one of main the questions I asked Mike was if he had crews to handle the job. He said yes?that he had two. He said we could expect to have the job done two weeks after the materials came. The job was completed (or Mike said the job was competed and left) on May 24th.
On 3/19/13 we signed the contract and gave him a down payment. The tear off started and we soon found out that the gables and chimney studs were rotton and had to be replaced. We OKed an estimate and MIke's guy started the work.
Then the rain started and since Mike had not covered the open gables we started with leaks. Water streamed in our living room and garage causing a lot of stress in the house. When the rain stopped and the areas secured Mike fixed the damaged drywall and ceiling areas free of charge but we were unhappy that these areas were left exposed.
Then the siding crew showed up. There were four of them and they seemed to be competent and responsive. They started work and we were hopeful that the job would be done quickly.
During this period there were several days that were forecast for rain but it never did. I was told by one of his workers that they were taking "inside" jobs because it looked like rain. I am a business owner and understand that you need to keep the cashflow going but this happened at least 12 days in the "working days" of April leaving us wondering if we were forgotten.
It turns out the crew had other siding jobs going on in Flora. It was in this time that I found out that this crew was not Mike's crew. They told me that they were a Loy Quinn crew. When I asked Mike he said he had to let his crews go...that he could not find good workers.
Then one Saturday morning I was informed (surprised) the custom siding Mike ordered had run out and the crew was moving on. We still had a lot of the house to finish. He said they wasted material and that this crew typically ordered more material then they needed then took the rest back to keep the return cash (Loy Quinn customers beware). They told Mike he was an idiot in front of both me and Mike and told me "the old man does not know what he is doing." Mike just stood there and said nothing.
Mike made me walk around the house telling them things that I thought needed fixed. I thought Mike was walking with us to back me up when I asked for some sloppy-looking work to be fixed. Out of the 15 things I asked to be fixed this crew debated, contested and declined to fix 13 of them. Then did a half assed job on the three things they fixed (again, Loy Quinn customers beware). Mike just stood there and said nothing. I guess I figured Mike planned to take care of those things later so I let them go...what else was I going to do?
So we were waiting another 2 weeks for siding. When it came Mike had one guy working on it that he let go a few days in. Then it was Mike and a new guy finishing up. It was done in about 2 weeks but I some areas were still spotty.
Mike sent me a text saying "Done" and I said not yet. I sent him images of the sloppy-looking work I still wanted fixed - from the first crew and a few of his newer sloppy work. We exchanged texts and he said there was no pleasing me and that he would knock $400 off and if I did not pay him he would put a lein on my house. My attorney said if the work was 90% done and this was such a headache to take the deal get rid of this loser. I agreed and did that.
I told Mike I was frustrated that he did not tell me he had lost his crews since it seemed that this happened before he started the siding project and it was one of the main things I asked him.
I'm sure he will respond that I was hard to work for and that I am too picky?I wish I could post pictures of the sloppy work?but at the end of the day he was not forthcoming to me about his crews and acted very unprofessional, litigious and combative as things got worse?instead of working to help make the customer happy.
"I have to admit I did something that I rarely do and hired a sub because I got behind on work. I don't know about the 'Loy Quinn" thing though, I was told by Glen, the sub foreman, that they had their own company called Sealtite. Any way they did a poor job. Tension got high, they wanted paid for what they did, and I told them no money until homeowner passed the work they had done. It came to a head on the 27th and the homeowner checked the work and pointed out a couple of things and then said it was ok, and I paid them and sent them down the road. Then when I was finish, homeowner wanted to complain about things that were already passed by him. And we text each other. We came to an agreement, I finish a couple of things, gave him $400 off and walked away. Will say...will never use subs again. I am sorry about this job but did all I can do."
Mike and his guys did a great job as usual. They've done several projects for us and we've been happy with all their work.
Mike and his guys were really good working around my nervousness about electrical work (they didn't do anything electrical while we were out of town) - but also had a good time teasing me about my nerves, which in turn made me become more comfortable with what they were doing. They did a great job & somehow managed to turn a really ugly kitchen and awkward hall/entry area into a lovely workable space. All areas are so much more usable and the flow of the kitchen, hall, laundry, entry are much, much better. We have used him again for other projects (see those reviews too) and will have him come out again - hopefully next summer - to do the sun room addition. We recommend him without any hesitation.
installation of my front storm door, and he didn't leave until it was perfect. He didn't even want to charge me $75 - I offered it because he spent extra time making sure I was happy with the installation. And he always returned my emails, no matter how booked up he was. I appreciated that.
"I do kind of remember this job....although it's been over a year ago and this is the first I've heard of anything. The member had a leak and stained the lower floor ceiling. They thought it might be the drain or the water pipes were leaking. If the water pipes were leaking, being under pressure, there would always be water leaking. So it looked like there was a leak around the door. I repaired that and told them if it still leaked it was proably in the drain and that that would be costly to try to repair. ( have to remove shower base). So we put in new faucets and repaired wall & door. If I had know that the leak was still there I would haved looked at it if call. I have heard nothing from the member, until now."
