"MIKE WAS VERY HELPFUL AND GAVE LOTS OF ADVISE DESPITE THE FACT THAT IT WAS NOT IN MY BEST INTEREST TO GO WITH HIM FOR WOOD WINDOW RESTORATION. MY WINDOWS ARE SO FAR GONE THAT HE RECOMMENDED VINYL, DESPITE THE FACT THAT HE DOESN'T SELL THAT TYPE. EXPLANATIONS WERE VERY CLEAR AND THOROUGH. FELT HE WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY. IF MY WINDOWS WERE IN SLIGHTLY BETTER SHAPE I WOULD HAVE DEFINITELY CHOSEN HIM TO DO THE WORK."

"Owner Matt McQuiston was friendly and thorough in preparing our quote, and kept in touch throughout the project. His crew went about their tasks with quiet good humor and attention to detail. I would hire them again. He deals in fiberglass windows and doors, and they appear to be excellent products."

"The crew was awesome. They removed and hauled away the old roof and installed new shingles and skylights. The crew was very pleasant and polite. No loud music or chatter. They cleaned up all the debris and trash and ran a magnet over the entire area to ensure that every nail and other metal pieces was picked up. All and all we are very happy about our experience with R&M Construction.

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can cover up a skylight if you no longer wish to have it in your space. There are a few options for covering up a skylight. One option is to install a skylight cover or shade that can be easily opened or closed as needed, allowing you to control the amount of light entering the room. Another option is to cover the skylight with a solid material, such as plywood or drywall, effectively sealing it off. However, when covering a skylight, it's essential to ensure proper insulation and waterproofing to prevent any issues in the future.

Common skylight issues include leaks, condensation between glass panes, damaged seals, and cracks in the glazing. Regular exposure to weather elements can lead to these problems, requiring timely attention to preserve the integrity of the skylight and the surrounding roof structure.

Whether you need a permit to install a skylight depends on the scope of the project and local regulations. Generally, permits are required if the installation involves altering the structural components of your home, such as moving roof rafters. In some municipalities, a permit might also be necessary if the skylight protrudes above the highest point of your existing roof. However, if no structural changes are made, a permit may not be needed. The cost for a skylight installation permit is typically under $100. A convenient time to add a skylight is during a roof replacement, as your contractor can incorporate the new opening into the design.

Fixed skylights are by far the most popular type. Because skylights can be pretty high up on your ceiling, fixed (rather than operable) skylights remove some maintenance from the equation. Plus, you don’t have to constantly worry if you shut your skylight fully the last time you opened it or if you’re going to find a leak later on during a rainy day.

Pros of installing a skylight include the fact that you will get much more natural light in your home, skylights can make your room look bigger than it actually is, and your home may increase in value. Cons include difficult upkeep (you may have to get on a ladder to clean and maintain them), higher installation costs, and, potentially, too much heat gain from all the extra sunlight.
