"I would highly recommend Sanders and Sons. They were very knowledgeable on how to fix the issues with our chimney on both of our houses. Their service was quick and efficient and their pricing was budget friendly. I would hire them again for any masonry work and we have recommended them to several neighbors in our area."

"He was responsive and professional. He will charge a fair price and will take the time to make sure the job is done right. He wonâ t stamp his name on a project done incorrectly. If you need any foundation/masonry work done, definitely give him a call! We had Begley Masonry do a foundation repair. He was great to work with. He was very responsive and fair, and always explained exactly what he was doing. We would use them again."

"Iâ  ve had the pleasure of hiring Warren Masonry on two different occasions. The first time to replace gutters and down spouts. The second time was to repair brick veneer. On both jobs, Alex and his crew did an excellent job. I highly recommend Warren Masonry for any gutter replacement or masonry repairs needed on your home or business!"

Customers say: True professional

"Dominguez Masonry was very easy to work with. My job required multiple trips and close attention to detail in order to replace existing mortar around historic brick with new mortar that was a reasonable match to color, texture, and hardness of the original. Other companies I had tried to work with didn't seem to want to go through the trouble, but Martin made several test patches so that we could fine-tune the replacement mortar recipe. The overall appearance of the re-pointing was great when his crew was done."

"The Lasting Impressions team did an excellent job removing my previous patio and replacing it with beautiful stamped concrete. I appreciated the hard working and professional crew that worked on my project - they left the worksite safe and clean before they left each day. I am very pleased with the way the finished patio looks - it met all my hopes for the space. There was careful attention to detail, especially in the small finishing touches. The price for the project was quite reasonable."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can enlarge windows in a brick house. Your masonry contractor will need to cut away exterior brick to make space for the larger window, and you may also need to consult a structural engineer to make sure the window is properly supported inside the frame of the house.

There are many things to look for when buying a brick house. Here are some of the key things you should pay close attention to.

  • Lintels: Look for cracks, holes, displacement, or corrosion

  • Mortar: Check to see if the mortar is old and crumbling, in need of repointing, or new. Also check to see if the mortar has a professional finish.

  • Walls: Check along each side of the house. If a wall is bowing outward, this indicates a severe issue such as foundation damage or that the walls are ready to fall.

  • Cracks: If there are stair step cracks in the brickwork, this indicates an unstable foundation.

Most of the time, you don’t need to seal brickwork and can save that money for another area of home improvement. But if your brick is cracking or you live in an area with a lot of excess moisture (either in terms of rain or freezes), sealing can extend the lifetime of your home. But, make sure you use a breathable sealant, like siloxane, to allow the moisture to evaporate on its own.

You should use cement for a chimney crown. The purpose of the chimney crown is to protect the mortar below from water damage and the effects of weather. For this reason, chimney crowns should only be made using cement. When repairing a crown, use caulks and sealants designed for cement repair rather than mortar repair.

Drilling into brick or mortar requires the use of a masonry drill bit. Masonry drill bits appear similar to standard drill bits except for the leading tip of the bit. The tip has a bulky carbide arrow-shaped end slightly larger than the rest of the bit shaft. Standard or high-speed drill bits designed for making holes in wood or metal don’t have the ruggedness or design shape you need to drill into brick. They may not go through the brick at all, and if they do, they’re more likely to overheat, crack, or dull before you finish drilling.
