Small jobs welcome

"I had BC Enterprises blow in insulation in my attic. They did an excellent job of blowing in 16 inches of pink insulation. They cleaned up very well and couldn't even tell they were here. They also fixed a couple of leaked around my chimney and one at the back door. I will definitely use them in the future as they are very friendly and do fantastic work!!"

"The owner came out and offered a fair estimate. He was polite and thorough. We scheduled an installation date/time and two very polite workers showed up on time and got to work. They were courteous and cleaned up after themselves, using a shop-vac on the stairs. You couldn't tell they had been there. Efficient, courteous, and fair price."

"Chris was great to work with. I hired them to blow insulation in my attic. He explained everything that was going to be done and I felt good knowing things were going to be done right and up to code. The cost was also affordable. They came in and weren’t disruptive at all as I was able to continue working in my home office while they were there. I would recommend them in a heartbeat to anyone."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Hanging a thick blanket over your windows will help to keep the heat inside, but only a little. Covering the glass will also prevent the sunlight from getting in, which might actually decrease the efficiency of your window overall. If you get to the point where you’re hanging blankets over your window to keep warm, call in an expert to seal around your windows to prevent warm air from escaping. They may also recommend replacing old windows that aren’t as insulative as newer window technology. Sealing a window isn’t terribly expensive and can make a big difference.

One of the biggest disadvantages of glass garage doors is that they are not the best at insulating your garage. In the summer, heat can enter through the glass, while in the winter, heat can escape through the glass, increasing your electricity and gas bills as you crank up your HVAC unit. You can help mitigate the poorer insulation by investing in insulated glass and insulating your garage.

Insulating under a concrete slab foundation is a great way to improve the energy efficiency of your home, but it isn't necessary for outdoor projects like driveways, patios, sidewalks, and walkways. If you’re pouring in cold weather, insulating under the slab can help prevent heat loss from the concrete, aiding in proper curing. Along with accelerants, this can be a good way to ensure strong concrete despite pouring in the cold.

Whether plaster walls should be insulated depends on whether the walls are at particular risk of moisture problems. In many cases, you can insulate plaster walls, while in others, it's a poor decision because of the lack of a vapor barrier. Choose a reputable insulation contractor to help you decide if and how to proceed to increase your home's energy efficiency.

Structural insulated panels and rigid foam boards have the highest R-value of any insulation that contractors commonly use, with R-values reaching up to around 8.0. These types of insulation are best in extremely cold climates, but they’re generally preferred for new construction, as they can be challenging to retrofit. Blown-in and loose fill insulation provide the next best insulative value, provided the installation is done properly. It’s important to choose an insulation type that meets your needs based on climate, as maximizing R-value may not always be financially worthwhile if you live in a moderate climate.
