"Their team showed up on time and did an excellent job on our insulation. They cleaned up so well that you can’t even tell they were here, except that the house is already warmer. They were polite and the price was right. Highly recommend!"

"The owner came out and offered a fair estimate. He was polite and thorough. We scheduled an installation date/time and two very polite workers showed up on time and got to work. They were courteous and cleaned up after themselves, using a shop-vac on the stairs. You couldn't tell they had been there. Efficient, courteous, and fair price."

"Chris was great to work with. I hired them to blow insulation in my attic. He explained everything that was going to be done and I felt good knowing things were going to be done right and up to code. The cost was also affordable. They came in and weren’t disruptive at all as I was able to continue working in my home office while they were there. I would recommend them in a heartbeat to anyone."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Rigid foam board insulation is one of the safest insulation materials for basement walls. The panels offer a moisture barrier to prevent mold and mildew build-up. At the same time, this material is also fire-resistant, so you don’t have to worry as much about a fire breaking out as you would with spray foam insulation.

You do not always need to remove old insulation before adding new. If the existing insulation is in good condition—not wet, physically damaged, moldy, or infested with pests—you can add new insulation directly on top of it for a compounding effect. You can also mix different types, such as adding blown-in insulation around existing fiberglass batts.

However, removal is recommended if the old insulation is compromised by water damage or pests. You should also remove it if you plan to install a different type of insulation, like switching from roll or batt insulation to spray foam. If the existing insulation is very old or damaged, you will likely get more benefit from removing it and starting fresh.

In some cases, yes, insulating an unheated garage can lead to mold and mildew. The issue with insulating a garage is that the interior will warm up and cool down more slowly than the exterior air, which can cause condensation inside the space. Where there is moisture, there is likely to be mold and mildew over time. Installing a vapor barrier can help avoid moisture and mildew problems in an insulated garage.

Unless your cellulose insulation is wet, moldy, or showing signs of mildew or pests, there’s no need to remove it before adding new insulation on top of it. Inspect your insulation thoroughly before adding the new insulation, and if you’re unsure how to assess the presence of mold or mildew, talk to a mold remediation specialist near you.

A garage ceiling needs a vapor barrier if it’s a heated garage or if you’re installing insulation in the ceiling. Without a vapor barrier, you risk moisture issues and mold growth. If you have an unheated garage and don’t plan on installing insulation that could get wet and harbor mold, the ceiling doesn't need a vapor barrier.
