Roll-off dumpsters are typically between 10 and 12 yards and are among the most common and convenient options because you can simply roll off your trash rather than removing it by hand. Commercial dumpsters range from 2 to 10 yards in size and are often used to collect daily trash. Finally, bag dumpsters are the smallest option you have at 2 to 5 yards, but they’re also the most inconvenient because you have to personally carry them on and off your truck.

The amount a 6-by-10-foot dump trailer can hold varies depending on the model. Generally, however, they can hold at least 4 cubic yards of waste with a load capacity of at least 4,000 lbs. This is around 1/4 to 1/2 the amount a standard junk removal truck can hold. It’s also considerably less than the most common dumpster size of 20 cubic yards.

Although there’s a long list of items you can put in a rented dumpster, several items aren’t allowed. Most dumpster rental companies won’t allow paint cans, refrigerators, medical waste, household cleaners, hot water tanks, oil or fuel, and tires in their dumpsters. However, most let you dump furniture, wood, yard debris, small appliances, excess trash, and construction waste.

Several types of items aren't allowed in roll-off dumpsters. First of all, hazardous materials and hazardous liquids are a no-go. This includes asbestos, oil, wet paint and other materials. Other banned items include batteries, electronics with lithium batteries, propane tanks, tires, and appliances with refrigerants. Some areas have shifting requirements (for instance, certain locations do not allow mattresses), so check with your local regulatory agency.
