Small jobs welcome

"I first received a quote from BC Services back in January, but I had several other projects going on and decided to hold off. Throughout that time, Bo and Chris checked in periodically and respectfully to see if I was ready to move forward and whether there was anything else they could help with. There was never any pressure, just excellent customer service. When I finally decided to move forward with my roofing insulation project, I also added crawl space insulation to the scope of work. They were professional, respectful of my home, and did an outstanding job on both projects. The quality of the work exceeded my expectations, and I am very pleased with the results. I would definitely hire them again and highly recommend them to anyone looking for quality insulation and crawlspace related work."

"So much faith goes into hiring someone who you hope will take care of your "major" project as promised. Remmy's Home Services is just that company. They were not the most expensive quote nor the cheapest but when Cory came to my house and frankly went above and beyond what most would consider a simple blow-in insulation job, I knew I'd picked the right company. He did exactly as promised, treating my house as if it were his own and took care of all my concerns. After being here in this all electric home and dreading each winter because of the heating bill and ultimately deciding to freeze because the bill was outrageous, I knew I needed help. If you are looking for a company that will do the job as promised, be efficient and very professional, look no further. I've already recommended him to family. I could go on and on but just know, even if my bill is only reduced by pennies, this is one "major" home repair expense I do not regret. Thank you Cory and your helper for everything!!"

Drywall Insulation questions, answered by experts

Plaster itself has a higher R-value than drywall. However, there are other considerations surrounding plaster and insulation. As a general rule, it's easier to obtain consistency in insulating value and quality when working with drywall rather than plaster. Plaster walls often don't contain any insulation behind the wall covering by design, and careful evaluation is necessary when choosing to add it.

To properly clean and maintain your skip trowel drywall texture, dust the surface weekly with an electrostatic duster or vacuum with a soft brush attachment. Never scrub the surface. You can remove stains by gently applying a mild detergent solution with a paint roller, removing it with a damp roller, and drying with a dry roller. To cut down on cleaning frequency, avoid indoor smoking and limit the use of fireplaces.

Yes, you can apply new plaster over an existing plaster surface, such as a wall or ceiling, provided the old plaster is in good condition. Before you begin, check the stability of the existing plaster. The surface must be clean, free of loose material, and have no peeling paint. It is also recommended to roughen the surface slightly to promote adhesion. For older plaster, applying a base coat like a PVA emulsion or a specific bonding agent or primer is crucial. This step makes the existing plaster less porous and ensures the new and old layers adhere properly for a smooth, long-lasting finish.

The two most common drywall thicknesses for ceilings are 1/2-inch and 5/8-inch. For most standard residential applications, 1/2-inch drywall is sufficient and widely used. It provides adequate support and is lighter and easier to handle during installation compared to thicker sheets. However, 5/8-inch drywall is often used for specific cases where additional benefits are needed. It is heavier but provides superior sound dampening and fire resistance. You should consider using 5/8-inch drywall for ceilings in commercial buildings, between a garage and a living space, or above a finished basement to meet building codes or for enhanced soundproofing.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.
