Replacing cast iron pipes when they’ve reached the end of their life span is key to preventing leaks and clogs. Over time, cast iron pipes corrode and experience pipe scale, which thickens the inside of the walls and increases the chance of clogs while also decreasing water flow. Ejector pumps can only push sewage 750 feet or less. That’s because their purpose is to move waste from your home to your sewer line—which is a relatively short distance. Grinder pumps can transport sewage further, but they manage lower volumes of waste than ejector pumps (and they don’t work with septic systems).

Some signs that your main sewer line is clogged are easy to spot, like when water backs up into your showers, sinks, and toilets for no apparent reason. However, some indicators are more subtle. The most common signs that you may have a clogged sewer main include:

  • Gurgling sounds coming from drains or toilet

  • Water in your basement drain or in the lawn

  • Smell of raw sewage throughout your home

  • Other found odors like rotten eggs around your home

In an emergency plumbing situation, taking the time to vet a plumber properly might not be feasible. Instead, it’s helpful to ask the following questions to gauge the experience and expertise of the plumber you’re considering quickly:

  • How many years of experience do you have?

  • Are you licensed and insured?

  • How quickly are you able to get to my property?
