"A radon test of my basement showed Radon levels above the EPA recommendations of 4.0. I contacted Tim Hinojosa of Radon Technology Company who came out to my house and examined my basement. He carefully reviewed my basement and briefed me on the methods for reducing Radon emissions. He then sent me a proposal carefully explaining all the details that needed to be done and the price for the work. He even included the expected annual costs to operate the system. I accepted the proposal. He and a coworker arrive right on the agreed time and date and went to work. Tim worked in the basement and his coworker worked outside. They were a real coordinated team. In about 3 and 1/2 hours they were done. The installation was very neat and everything was cleaned up. Tim left a Radon measurement device in my basement which was read several days later as 1.9. I was very pleased with the work and the results."

"Everything went well with them. I was very pleased with the job he did. I paid $90 extra for radon detection as well. Scheduling went well. I called him to set up the appointment. He was able to accommodate with my schedule. He was informative and explained what he was doing. This was the best home inspection I have had. I would definitely use him in the future."

Radon Detection and Reduction questions, answered by experts

The cost to replace a radon fan ranges from $300 to $600 for the fan itself, with installation adding an additional $200 to $500. Overall, the total cost for replacement can range from $500 to $1,100, depending on factors such as the fan model, home size, and local labor rates. If the fan is part of a larger radon mitigation system, the price may be higher.

Radon is the number one non-smoking cause of lung cancer in the United States, but it can cause some other concerning side effects in the meantime. If you have a raspy voice, chest pains, trouble breathing, difficulty swallowing, or any of the above, don’t hesitate to perform radon testing and install a mitigation system as soon as possible.

You'll need to test your home for radon after installing the mitigation system, then again every two years. If radon remains elevated, contact a licensed radon professional, either the contractor who installed the system or a different one, and have them evaluate the system. They may need to make some changes to improve its effectiveness and performance.

You can vent radon out of your house sometimes by simply opening a window, but it won’t remove the source, and will likely rise above recommended levels quickly. A professional will be needed to assess your home, and determine the best strategy for radon removal. Active radon sump pumps and soil depressurization systems are often used to forcefully vent the radon from your home.

No, air purifiers are not an effective way to reduce or remove radon. Radon is a radioactive, inert gas that cannot be filtered by standard air purifiers, which are designed to capture particulates like dust and mold. While an air purifier can improve indoor air quality by removing other pollutants, it should not be relied upon for radon. The only effective solution for high radon levels is a dedicated radon mitigation system.
