"Working with Hays and Sons was not a good experience. We had water damage and they made repairs without checking with our insurance company so we ended up paying out of pocket. They did a terrible job painting our ceiling and their solution was to paint one stripe at the top of each wall. Now we have to paint all the walls on the first floor ourselves. They initially charged us for over $2,000 of services they did not provide. I think they hope customers don't look carefully at the bills, especially if the insurance company is paying."

When water penetrates wood, the wood swells, causing the wood and veneer to separate. This separation creates bubbles on the surface of your furniture. If water spills on wood veneer, it needs to be dried ASAP. Surface spills can cause minor damages like white spots and blushing, but if you’re slow to action, you’re looking at more work—and spending—to restore your wood veneer.

If the scratch is large enough that it compromises the integrity of the wood, a wood filler probably won’t be enough to fix the problem. Stay away from using window cleaners and other harsh cleaning solutions on antique wood—or any wood in your home for that matter. The pH of the cleaners can break down the finish and permanently damage and stain the wood below. Even when it comes to more durable areas, such as when cleaning your baseboards, only use cleaning solutions that are safe for porous materials. 

If your wood stain is still rubbing off after the recommended drying time, it means the pigments didn’t soak into the wood properly and remain on the surface. There are a few possible causes, including applying the stain in hot temperatures, applying too much stain, or failing to wipe off excess before it dries completely.
