Working with Hays and Sons was not a good experience. We had water damage and they made repairs without checking with our insurance company so we ended up paying out of pocket. They did a terrible job painting our ceiling and their solution was to paint one stripe at the top of each wall. Now we have to paint all the walls on the first floor ourselves. They initially charged us for over $2,000 of services they did not provide. I think they hope customers don't look carefully at the bills, especially if the insurance company is paying.

The company had requested for a $1000.00 upfront payment, but after confirming with my insurance company, I was advised not to pay any upfront payment instead advised to make sure that the service should be done completely before demand for payment is made. I then called Hays and Sons, to tell them that not a dime would be paid upfront, not until the service and work has been completed. I advised the Keith and the contract coordinator Jim, to call my insurance agent and they will be the one to arranged the $1000.00 upfront payment. I have been dealing with Angie's List for quite a while and I wanted to check if the company is with Angie's List, and they were indeed listed.
Response from Hays & Sons
"Mrs. [Member Name Removed], it is our policy to collect an amount up front. It is typically either the deductible amount if it's an insurance claim or 50% of the total contract amount if it is not an insurance claim. We sincerely apologize if this does not work for you. The good news is we have not begun any of the work, so we completely understand if you rather use a different contractor. Our team will be in touch to discuss how we move forward. - Hays + Sons"

Everything was completed in a reasonable amount of time. At that time of year (March/April) they were very busy with many customers experiencing similar problems due to the excessive rainfall. They probably lost about three days in completing the work due to the heavy demand on their services. hey were very prompt in arriving the first time to set up the equipment to dry-out the basement. I had replaced the sump pump, so the standing water was gone when they arrived.

The basement remodeling project went much slower than promised, and resulted in multiple change orders for the original scope of work to be delivered, due to missing items in the original estimate. Project was scheduled for 6 weeks, but took 6 months. Quality issues during construction were associated with drywall and carpeting. Drywall issues were fixed prior to project closeout, carpeting installation issues were not corrected. Remediation work was satisfactory. We discovered a leak in our sump line, which they repaired and applied spray on affected framing. We also had an issue with our previously installed ejector pump failing. They did a good job cleaning up the damaged carpeting, trim and drywall with minimal damage. We did not re-engage them for the finish repairs after the remediation.

"[Member Name Removed], first off thank you for the review. We are glad that you were happy with the responsiveness of our team. The timeline changing was unfortunate and something we are reviewing with the team that worked on your project to make sure it doesn't happen for any future customers. We hope you give us a chance on any future projects you have to prove that this amount of timeline changes are not the norm."

We had to live in another vacant Habitat House for 3 months while our house was being fixed. Hays & Sons did a great job of cleaning up the mess. Our whole living room had to be re-done. I was amazed that because of a hole in the living room they re-stomped the living room ceiling, the kitchen and hallway ceilings too! Wow! The pictures show the damage the car did; the last 3 show the house outside and inside after we moved back in.

David P. was my general contractor and he was a true pleasure to work with. He was always prompt, professional and the crews he hired did a great job repairing my house back to the way it was before the incident.

Quality ended up being satisfactory but only after having to call back a number of times to address needed work. Additionally, after originally agreeing to do the work, Estimator from Hays & Sons called and left a voice mail at approximately 5:00 p.m. on a Friday that Hays & Sons is cancelling the work, when work was scheduled to begin on Monday. After calling the main office to complain, the Estimator called on Sunday to inform me I must have misunderstood, even though we had Hays & Sons commitments in email exchanges. Most promises on schedules and scope of work were not kept; dates and times when contractor or their subs were to show up were repeatedly missed. Also, when they failed to show up, no one called to say so forcing us to wait and finally having to call to find out when they would show up. Additionally, many different project managers and contacts were assigned, which made communications with the company very, very challenging. Scope of work that was billed for in original submitted bill was not completed, so bill had to be redone. Very impersonal service and many, many broken promises, with what appeared like, very little regard. After taking so much longer and based upon our experiences with Hays & Sons we were faced with, the scope of work was reduced and Hays & Sons was told they would not complete the original scope of work.

Our insurance company recommended them-
We had them come out and do an estimate and a review of the work.  They did a good job of looking at all the damage and estimating what needed to be done.   They did 2 projects for the repair.  They replaced the cracked brick and they replaced the broken deck pieces.  The brick work was good.  They were not able to match the brick exactly but got a somewhat close match. In all fairness the house is 50+ years old it would be hard to match exactly.   Then they worked on the deck thats where things fell apart.  They did not match all the wood we used on the deck, only the composite decking did they match.  The boards did not line up properly on all the decking they did and they actually installed one facia board upside down.  When asking them about fixing this they denied any wrong doing, and then proceeded to tell us we installed the deck incorrectly to begin with.   This is even with their review of the boards and the very obvious board that was installed upside down.  Essentially they took their extremely overpriced job and ran with it.  They did not honor their warrenty  and were more than rude about explaining why.  I would not use them again in the future.  I did also warn my insurance company about not using them in the future either.   Their prices are inflated and their quality is subpar.

It was after hours when they were needed.   I received a call quickly and a person was dispatched to cover the areas of the roof that had lost shingles.
I was asked if I wanted a quote and said yes.  I cannot recall if it was then or the next day when someone looked over the damages inside and out and offered their proposal.
When my insurance company appraiser came out he commented that this company had used quality material to cover the areas, not the blue tarps on can buy for 15$.  He said those break down quickly in the sunlight.
I am reviewing this proposal and another one I have and will make a determination soon.
As cold as it has been it is not advised to put shingles on from all I have read and been told.

Nationwide, my insurance provider, "strongly encouraged" I use this company as they were a preferred provider.  That basically meant that all other estimates I provided were declined.  Hays came in and took care of the mold remediation. They gutted the bathroom and my hallway.  The remediation took a while but I had minimal complaints with that process.  The problems occurred during the restoration.  Hays took weeks after the remediation to start work.  Then they would only come in one day a week and do something minor. The mold was discovered August 1st of 2015 and I fired them in November.  I would call both insurance and Hays to try to get them to move faster.  It didn't work.  Here is the biggest issue.  I had previously had a porcelain bathtub.  Hays told me I could only get a standard tub and they had one in stock.  I said ok and they installed a fiberglass tub.  I went to my estimate and saw that they had budgeted about $1000 for a new tub.  The fiberglass tub cost about $100.  When I called to ask about this, I never received an answer.  They had told me that even though the estimate called for concrete board behind the shower, that what I really needed was green board.  I, not being an expert here, agreed.  As it turns out, that is against code and all of it had to be replaced.  I fired them after lack of communication over the tub and the substantial time it was taking to complete the job.  When I had the new contractor in to finish everything, they discovered that Hays had improperly installed the vanity and had caused a leak in the crawlspace, leading to more mold!  I hired Tremain to come out to repair and finish everything, it took 4 days!

"[Member Names Removed]. We take these reviews seriously. I've researched our system and I cannot find a job under your name or at your address. I would like to look into this for you. Did we do work for you at another address or under a different name? There is also a Hayes and Sons and an H&R that we at times get confused with. Please advise so I can look into this and get it resolved. Thank you. ~Chris"

The company was initially contacted to remove dry wall and to provide mold remediation if needed.  The crew did a great job at removing the part of the ceiling that was saturated.  The contractor then informed me they could provide additional services to repair other areas of the ceiling, but when an appointment was made, the contractor cancelled.  I then tried again to reach out to the company and was told they would be by the next day.  They never showed.
