"We could not be more satisfied with the work that JK did for us. We completed a large paver job along the driveway, a walkway to the backyard and a full patio. The team also laid pea gravel in several areas where we have sheds, etc. Tino and team did an incredible job. Tino also was in touch with us throughout the project, helping us navigate around some challenging and unexpected circumstances related to a previous contractor. Just amazing all around."

"Gibran and his crew were the hardest working crew I've ever seen. They arrived 15 minutes before scheduled each day (3 in total) and worked hard with very few breaks. They were neat and tidied up the site as they went and at the end of each day. I had a few things that had to be brought from the street to the house and the garage and they voluntarily helped me carry them through the war zone that was the demo area of the driveway. They all clearly care about the work they are doing and take pride in doing it. Communication skills are very high. I did have other contractors bid on the work and although their pricing was competitive, only Gibran (5 Star's owner) suggested adding drains to our catch basin to reduce the potential of standing water near our foundation. The existing driveway was approximately 100 years old. The neighbor's lot line is the edge of our driveway, so Gilbran suggested we do his walkway as well, since it would not look good o have the new and century old concrete side by side. The crew took great care to make sure that these two old homes were not damaged during the entire process. Gilbran is a good family man. We shared photos of our daughters and talked about his ambitions. He is the kind of person you know who takes his job and community seriously. He is a good salesman and delivers what he promises."

"3D Brick Paving in Des Plaines did a great job designing and installing our backyard patio for us. Franco presented ideas to accommodate our needs considering the limited space of the property. He was able to design a beautiful patio that incorporated a flow from the back door to the patio, to the driveway, to a second backyard entrance and the garage - tying everything together into an attractive package. He also worked through several suggestions of different materials to solve an issue with an entrance to a new back porch. 3D’s attention to grading and drainage works perfectly, making the patio immediately useable after a heavy rain. The installers were courteous, skilled, and thorough with the cleanup after completing the job. We highly recommend them!"

Customers say: Super punctual

"J.D. scored right away by answering my first call on a Sunday when I was planning to leave a voice message, and we managed to have a few laughs in the course of that conversation.  As noted above, his proposal was the best among several that were also good.  I liked that he offered to go with me to the growers to nail down exactly what cultivars to plant - and I took him up on that offer once we got to that phase of the project.  I also liked that he worked with our design plan without nitpicking the fact that it wasn't fully detailed as he probably would have preferred. As with every big project, there are always speed bumps - some in our control, and some that aren't. One bump in control was checking assumptions - we thought J.D. was checking into options for material to frame our raised bed along with our own research - and he thought we were handling the research and procurement of those materials. As that was a critical path item before we left on vacation, I would have liked a little more confirmation on who was doing what.  As it turned out, my husband came up with an ingenious solution and together with J.D., they worked on the install of that piece. Other bumps out of control - Mother Nature!  We discovered a beach of sand under our old driveway (courtesy of Lake Michigan), necessitating a deeper dig and about 24" of gravel.  J.D. and his team swung into action and took care of the challenge right away, and with such quality. And - there was the intense heat and drought conditions during the summer of 2012 - and J.D. kindly agreed to delay the install of the landscape as much as he could without throwing off other clients on his schedule.  About the install of the ground covers and grasses - he did such an artful job of interpreting our fairly loose design. As I spent time watering and pulling the tiniest of weeds over the fall of 2012, I appreciated more and more the thought he put into what went where. Finally and most importantly - the people.  J.D. by now you should surmise is great to work with.  But he is matched by his business partners who did such a professional job on every aspect of the install.  Truly great guys - extremely diligent and willing to answer questions and endure my photographs each day as they made progress.  They kept the site tidy, were respectful to the neighbors, and the quality of their work is obvious - very tight, very exact, very solid. J.D. and his subs were outstanding - even happy to do extras, like pulling out a "shrub" I detested and coming back to replace bits of sod that didn't thrive as well as the rest.

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

The choice between asphalt and concrete depends on your priorities, budget, and climate.

Concrete is generally more durable, lasting up to 50 years with minimal upkeep, and offers more customization options like staining and stamping, which can add more to a home's value. However, it is more expensive upfront and can be prone to cracking in cold climates where water can freeze and expand.

Asphalt is typically cheaper and quicker to install and is easier to repair. It performs better in colder climates. However, it requires more maintenance, including regular resealing, has a shorter lifespan, and can get hot and sticky in intense sunlight.

Ultimately, if durability and long-term value are key, concrete is often the better choice. If upfront cost and performance in cold weather are more important, asphalt may be preferable.

New asphalt typically needs 24 to 72 hours to dry before it can handle light foot traffic and careful driving. Although it may appear solid after a few days, the full curing process, where the asphalt reaches its peak strength, takes much longer—generally from 30 days to a year.

During this extended curing time, the surface remains relatively soft and can be damaged by heavy vehicles, sharp objects, or high temperatures. To protect your investment, it's best to avoid parking heavy machinery on the asphalt until it has fully cured.

The exact time required for drying and curing depends on several factors, including the weather, the specific asphalt mix, and its thickness. For the most accurate advice tailored to your situation, consult with your asphalt contractor.

While some areas may allow for a slope of up to 20%, this is often the maximum slope for driveways, with a few exceptions of up to 25%. Other regions may have a maximum of 12%, 15%, or 18%, so check with your local building department to ensure you’re laying a driveway that is up to code for your location.

Yes, a paved or repaved driveway can boost your home's value by increasing its curb appeal and the functionality of your outdoor space. A new driveway can add anywhere from $5,000 to $20,000 to a property's value. An old, crumbling driveway can be a red flag for potential buyers and inspectors.

The amount of value added depends on the materials used, the design, and local market conditions. Concrete is often cited as adding the most value due to its long lifespan, though asphalt may be more desirable in colder climates. The return on investment is greatest when replacing a driveway that is in poor condition; repaving a driveway that is already in good shape will not yield as significant an increase in value.

In most cases, you don’t need a permit to repave your driveway, although some exceptions exist. If you’re widening your driveway and plan on widening the apron as well, you’ll usually need a permit from the Department of Transportation in your area. This permit costs between $50 and $300 in most cases. Most municipalities will also require a certified and insured contractor do the work relating to the apron and curb cut. You can contact your building department or ask your paving company if you need a permit. Your driveway professional will usually pull the permit for you.
