Sometimes you will need a stronger cleaning solution to thoroughly clean furniture before painting. If your wood stain is still rubbing off after the recommended drying time, it means the pigments didn’t soak into the wood properly and remain on the surface. Applying a topcoat sealer is not required, but it will keep the stain from fading over time. This is particularly important if the stain imparts a color or varnish. It’s usually better to repair old furniture because older pieces tend to be made out of hardwood, like oak and maple, whereas newer furniture is more often made out of plywood, medium-density fiberboard (MDF), and other less durable materials.
