"Requesting a quote from and then hiring Illinois Tree Service was quick and easy. Their quote was the same as another large operation in town, but they didn't need to bring massive equipment into the yard as the other company had in the past. A large crew of men worked safely and efficiently for about six to seven hours to remove both old cottonwoods and grind their stumps. They cleaned up beautifully as they worked and left the yard free of sticks and branches. I would highly recommend them."

  • Chainsaw: Using a chainsaw is the fastest method, but it comes with significant safety risks, especially for inexperienced users.

  • Burning: This can be an effective method, but it is not recommended unless you can first drill holes into the stump. Without holes, the stump will be difficult to light and may not burn completely through.

A power drill with at least a ⅜-inch diameter bit can make the job quicker and easier, regardless of the primary method. While you can use a chisel or chainsaw without a drill, it will require more time and effort. Always wear protective goggles and thick gloves, as splinters are an inevitable risk.

Trees should be pruned every two to five years, depending on its age and type. Young trees should be inspected and pruned every two to three years. A plum tree's central leader (or trunk) should never extend more than 3 feet above the highest branch. When you first plant your tree, cut the central leader so it’s 2 to 3 feet tall.
