"The O'Rourke team was a joy to work with. Sean came out, met us, listened to what we wanted in a deck, and came back with a very competitive estimate. He was happy to make some revisions, and we hired him. His team took care of obtaining permits, removing the old deck, preparing the ground (including a weed barrier), and building the new deck. Sean was easy to communicate with and kept us updated as things went along. We realized we had made an error in what we requested, and he was able to pivot and give us a beautiful deck that we use often. Our deck is the envy of the neighborhood and we love it! Thanks O'Rourke!"

"My overall impression and experience with AKDK Services, LLC is very favorable. I was extremely satisfied with the team’s prompt service, good communications, high-quality and detailed work, fair market pricing, and a professional attitude. Dan Kosinski, AKDA Services Operation Manager responded promptly to my initial inquiry. After detailing our needs, he immediately did a full assessment for the work required and worked with me outlining all the work required for the scope of the project. As with many projects like this one, he alerted me to additional needs when they surfaced. The work was re-scoped and agreed upon. Dan and his team was at all times very professional, prompt, and above all else, did an exceptional job and completed on time and to standard. We will definitely be calling on AKDK Services for any future needs."

"This company really has it all together. After getting multiple estimates from unreliable companies, they stepped in, gave very clear and easy to understand process and pricing. We opted to go with them because we saw a lot of value and really trusted them to do a great job. They exceeded all our expectations in the quality of the work and their communication and commitment. Would recommend Mark and Mike they are the guys you are looking for a high quality paint job."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

In the majority of cases, you don’t need regulatory permission or permits to remove decking components and materials. However, the exception is if you live in or near a wildlife conservation area, which could require permits and consent prior to beginning the demolition. Check with a local regulatory agency for more information.

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.

Applying too much sealer to a deck might seem like extra protection, but it can cause more harm than good. Wood is a porous material with a limited capacity to absorb liquids. When you go overboard with sealer, the excess can't soak in and instead forms a film on the surface. This leftover layer is prone to peeling, cracking, and trapping moisture, ultimately defeating the purpose of sealing in the first place.

Deck boards should be spaced no more than three-eighths of an inch apart. This is enough space to allow water and small debris to pass through without collecting on the surface, but not enough to create a tripping hazard. Certain materials, like pressure-treated wood, shrink over time, so they may need less space at installation.

Decks require several inspections during and after the building process, but the specifics vary depending on where you live. Most areas mandate that decks comply with local building codes and safety regulations for the foundation, framing, and structure. Some pros recommend a footing inspection, which verifies the depth, width, and location of the various footings to ensure they offer enough foundational support.
