Maine Chimney Sweep (MCS) is a certified company through the Chimney Sweep Institute of America (CSIA) and a member of the National Chimney Sweep Guild (NCSG). All our prices are preset and vary based on service/chimney type and city location.

"I do not recommend you use this company! I am in the process of buying a new home and for record this is my first home. I called Maine Chimney Sweep for a quote for a fireplace inspection since it was a recommendation from our real estate company. The lady answered the phone and gave me a quote of $135. I then asked how soon they could do my inspection. They gave me less 2 weeks out so thought the price was fair and timing was right. Well time went by and I hadn’t received a confirmation so I called again the day before inspections to verify that we are set for June 1st and to verify the price one more time and ask who I should write my check to. I was then told $135 again and write a check to Maine Chimney Sweep. Now inspection day comes and I get a call from my real estate agent stating I owe double than what I wrote the check for. I then spoke to the field technician about this and he stated it was $135/fireplace. At this point I was not happy and upset with the lack of communication. #1 this is my first time buying a home. I was never asked how many fireplaces were in the home and had no idea this was even needed information to let them know. The tech then tells me that he will continue the inspections and so far everything looks very clean and there is only one safety issue so far. He had already been on the roof and done one of the 2 fireplaces at this point. I was also told the owner would call me back. Well 24 plus hours went by and I heard nothing from this company since I left several messages the day of the inspection trying to reach someone about my issue. On June 3rd I finally was able to reach Brenda at the front desk. I was then told I would be receiving only one fireplace report. This does not cut it when you have a contract for buying a new home when there is 2 fireplaces. I then asked for the owner to call me back like I was originally told would happen. The female owner calls me back. She gets very defensive quickly as I explained my situation. Instead of sending me a report she decides she is returning our money all together even after wasting her field techs time and then stated there were a lot of issues with the fireplaces after being told by the field tech that everything is very clean and one minor issue. As the professional in fireplaces and chimney industry your company should be asking multiple questions when someone calls for a quote. As a new home buyer I have no idea what kind of information you need. You misquoted me and then tried to lie to me about the condition of the fireplaces. Sad to see the lack of professionalism your team had to give to customers."

"James and his crew did a great job for us. They showed up when they said they would, came early and stayed late to get the work done. We were impressed with the work ethic of the crew. They left the job site clean each day and performed the work as discussed. The cost of the work was reasonable and was better than other estimates we had for the job. They stayed on budget. I was very pleased with the quality of the workmanship and would not hesitate to refer them to friends or family."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

The premise for painting a brick building is fairly simple: Prime the bricks to seal the surface and apply the top coat to protect your brick home. However, it’s easy to miss a few important steps if you’re starting from a raw brick surface and don’t know the basics of how to paint brick. So be sure to reach out to a local professional painter if you have any reservations about correctly painting your brick house.

Yes, concrete is significantly stronger than masonry, especially if the concrete pour includes reinforcements, like steel rebar. Concrete is a uniform material that can withstand compression, sheer force, and tensile force as long as it’s reinforced. Masonry involves the use of mortar or grout to connect individual building materials, like brick, stone, or tile. Mortar and grout are also reasonably strong and resist compression well, but they don’t come close to the strength of poured concrete.

Chimney mortar typically lasts 20 to 30 years, depending on its quality, local weather conditions, and maintenance. Over time, exposure to moisture, freezing, and thawing cycles can cause mortar to deteriorate, leading to cracks and gaps. Regular inspections and timely repairs, such as repointing or tuckpointing, can extend the lifespan of chimney mortar by ensuring the structure's integrity.

Yes, limewash on brick can accumulate dust over time. Its porous nature can attract dust particles, especially in environments with high levels of dust or dirt. Additionally, if the limewash surface is left unsealed, it may be more prone to collecting dust. Additionally, incorrectly applied limewash will generate dust. Causes include applying it too thickly instead of thin layers and not allowing enough drying time between layers. Regular maintenance, such as gentle cleaning or dusting, can help mitigate dusty issues.

Yes, you can enlarge windows in a brick house. Your masonry contractor will need to cut away exterior brick to make space for the larger window, and you may also need to consult a structural engineer to make sure the window is properly supported inside the frame of the house.
