"Brian S did a great job diagnosing issues with my water heater. He was able to schedule one of their plumbers to come out and install a new water heater the next day. I would highly recommend Perma Seal for any future waterproofing and plumbing needs."

"Knowledgeable, polite, professional, easy to work with Shane is polite, efficient, and knowledgeable about the different types of insulation products, and their applications. Steven and Shane, a father and son team, provided an accurate estimate of cost and installation time. They explained the variety of options available for our applications, with pros and cons for each choice (including the cost and installation time.)"

"We have an approximately 600 square foot crawl space that
was in dire need of water proofing.  And High Tech Waterproofing did a
great job on our crawlspace encapsulation.  The bid process went smooth
and was straightforward.  The bid was around $5500 with no real
upselling.  We had a few foundation cracks that were sealed, some train
tile installed,  a backup sump pump system with battery installed, a
thick(40-50 mil) poly liner laid over the gravel surface with no seams, and 2?
of spray foam insulation sprayed over the exterior  foundation walls.
We had a tight schedule to get the work done and Chuck and
his team were very courteous and professional and worked with us to accommodate
our needs.   They worked efficiently and thoroughly and did a good
job cleaning up after themselves when the job was completed.
I would highly recommend them and would certainly use them
again.

"We contacted Hansen Brothers on the recommendation of our roofers to install the electrical outlet for a roof heat cable and to discuss our front steps project. Until this point, it was difficult to get anyone to accept the front steps project. Masonry contractors would not handle cement and cement contractors would not handle masonry. We needed a general contractor to help and Hansen Brothers came highly recommended. Bob Hansen sent his son over to check on the electrical outlet needs and Bob came to assess the front steps project. He listened to my requests and introduced us to a metal worker who would fabricate the new handrails. We made a railing selection and then we discussed the timing to complete the project. In the interim, Bob's son Eric installed the roof power outlet and back door sconce satisfactorily. We started the big project of the steps replacement mid-September and it took several weeks to complete, there was much to coordinate to get this project done properly. Bob was in constant communication about the progress. We had a bit of a slow down waiting for the cement contractor to deliver the concrete, but once that happened, everything else came together. The final electrical pieces and masonry work were completed shortly after the steps were done.  Everything turned out beautifully!  Bob's experience and familiarity with Chicago homes was evident. He gave sound advice and provided some excellent suggestions with our projects. Our neighbors have also commented on how well things turned out. I would indeed contract with Hansen Brothers again for my home projects and will recommend Bob Hansen to my family and friends. I feel we have finally found a trusted general contractor who is responsive who takes pride in his work.

"We have had leaky basement walls in multiple locations for the entire 30 years of living in our home. Our basement was poured with Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) made of Styrofoam. Apparently, it wasn’t a good choice or wasn’t poured properly."

"Once again Paul did a great job. His estimates were very fair and the finished rooms look like they were always there. They removed our entryway closet to add that space to our dining room, closed off that wall, tiled our entryway, placed new trim & baseboards, stained our front door and repainted the space. In our dining room, they reframed a wall, placed insulation under the floors & wall, installed sconces, installed new trim, baseboards, and chair rail, added flooring to the new space of the room, drywalled, and painted the room. They completed the job in about a week and cleaned up after themselves before they left for the day. Paul and his crew are very professional and flexible with your schedule, which is always appreciated."

"I met E. Campa Construction when they were working on my neighbor's garage (from what I could see it was a structural rebuild and finish for the roof and siding). I was very impressed with how they revived that dwelling. I approached the crew to obtain their information because I was looking to have work done on my property. The crew was very friendly and professional. They offered to give me a consulation on the spot but I didnt have time at that moment. I contacted E. Campa a few weeks later to look at the roof on my house. I had a leak that was worsening and needed resolution right away. Mr. Campa performed a thorough inspection and gave me all types of recommendations, noting that with the severity and history of the leak, and other issues with the roof, the best route was to get it completely redone. I completely agreed with his analysis. I did have other companies come out previously and they tried to sell me the moon and more, I was pleased with Mr. Campa's honesty and thoroughness, a real businessman that truly cares about his customers. With the work that needed to be done, I was concerned with the cost and financing, I just knew this would break the bank. That was not the case. E. Campa's solution was competitive AND they had financing through their company. OMG the process, the rates, the affordability, the options were just seamless. I wrote a separate review about that. I was very pleased with how the financing worked out. E. Campa kept me informed along the way with the progress of the project. They were very flexible with my schedule. The color choices were great. The work was done promptly, even with the cold settling in. The crews thoroughly cleaned the worksite and was open to answering any questions I had. E. Campa checked on me after the job was done to ensure I was satisfied. Overall the experience was great. No more leaks. Roof is gorgeous! I am scheduling an insulation project for my attic with E. Campa, and hope to have more projects done by them in the future. Thank you E. Campa!"

Insulation questions, answered by experts

The cost to rent an insulation vacuum ranges between $250 and $350 per day. The price will increase if you choose to rent for additional days, but you may get a discounted daily rate if you rent it for a whole week, which could cost up to $1,000. Once you've removed the insulation and are ready to replace it, the cost to rent a blown-in insulation machine ranges between $100 and $500.

Depending on where you live and the conditions of your basement, you may not need to insulate your basement. Your best bet is to talk to a basement remodeling company to find out what they recommend doing.

Insulating your basement can help improve your home's energy efficiency, but it will also increase the cost of your basement remodel project. The average cost of installing basement insulation is $2,400.

Rigid foam board insulation is one of the safest insulation materials for basement walls. The panels offer a moisture barrier to prevent mold and mildew build-up. At the same time, this material is also fire-resistant, so you don’t have to worry as much about a fire breaking out as you would with spray foam insulation.

Spreading tin foil over your windows works similarly to radiant barrier insulation, but not as well. It will reflect some of the sunlight that would otherwise come through the glass and warm up the inside of your home, so it might help a little to keep your home cool in the summer. However, the appearance isn’t preferable to blinds or drapes that can offer the same benefits. You might also consider tinting your windows instead, which is a more aesthetically pleasing change that can still block a good portion of the solar heat coming through your windows.

The best R-value for home insulation depends on where you live and where you’re installing the insulation. Your climate zone plays the biggest role in determining the correct R-value, so be sure to know which zone you live in when determining the R-value you need.
