"This is the first time I've hired a plumber, after owning my house for 44 years. My main sewer line was clogged very bad and our one toilet and drains no longer worked. This happened late on a Friday afternoon. so I called Mike Wagner, described my problem and he said he could check out the problem at 9:30 on Saturday morning. He told me not to use the toilet or drains overnight, since the sewer water would probably drain down. He arrived on time Saturday morning, assessed the problem (the water did drain down, as he said it would) and indicated he wanted to add a PVC clean-out behind my house and then rod out the sewer line to the street. He gave me a verbal cost estimate and said he could have a crew available to do the work on Sunday morning. He said we could use the toilet and drains sparingly until the work was completed. On Sunday morning, Mike and two helpers arrived to do the work at 9AM, he gave me a written quote, which I signed and they had everything done by noon. I paid for the work with a check, since he doesn't accept credit cards. Everything was completed quickly and professionally. The price I paid seemed a little bit higher than I had expected, but considering the work was completed quickly on the weekend, I can't complain. I was very satisfied with work that they did and Mike included a warranty, in case anything should go wrong, he would stand behind his work."

"It's hard being a woman and a homeowner, because service providers love to talk to you as though you aren't the owner, and they will try to overcharge you for your services or cut corners. I am pleased to say that I've finally found a plumber that I would not only use again, but recommend. He asked multiple questions so that he could give me a real price, not a price that gets him in the door that he could then upcharge. Nathan was on time, he had booties for his feet. When I needed something additional, he told me and explained why without being condescending. He did great, neat work for a fair price and also did a great job on the clean up. I'm VERY happy with my experience!"

Drain Cleaning questions, answered by experts

If you’re not using a septic system, problems with your home’s plumbing won’t cause this—it’s a city problem. A large blockage in the municipal sewage lines may cause those lines to back up into your home. This is extremely unpleasant and can be a serious health risk due to bacteria and other contaminants. If this occurs, call a pro (or your city) immediately.

If you've discovered a rather frightening buildup of brown and black gunk below your shower cover, you're not alone. The smelly sludge is often a collection of mildew and biofilm. Biofilm comes from the breakdown of soap scum, hair, skin cells, and bacteria that collects during shower time. It's quite common in a humid space and relatively easy to clean with a gentle DIY cleaning solution such as baking soda and vinegar.

Bleach is generally not recommended for your shower drains. Although diluted bleach can technically help clean your drain, it will not unclog your pipes. In fact, bleach can harm your plumbing system because it’s so powerful. The bleach can change the color of your sink and even corrode metal pipes and fittings.

Often, people reach for bleach because it's already in their house. But it's worth getting a plunger or a drain snake for the job instead. It'll be a lot less money to buy a new plunger than to pay a plumber to repair or replace damaged pipes.

There are many things that could cause your basement floor drain to back up. One significant cause of a drainage backup is flushing non-flushable items, such as wipes, paper towels, and facial tissue. Other causes of a backed-up basement floor drain include tree roots impeding the drain pipe or an accumulation of hair, oil, and grease.

Yes, you can use vinegar to unclog a dishwasher. To do so, combine 4 tablespoons of white vinegar with 4 tablespoons of baking soda and pour the mixture down your dishwasher’s drain. Let it sit for 15 minutes, then pour a cup of hot water down the drain to flush everything out. Finally, run a rinse cycle on your dishwasher to see if the clog is gone.
