"I hired EcoBuild to work on two projects. The first project was smaller and Mike the carpenter came out and did a wonderful job. He was pleasant and you could tell he was experienced. Normally when I have a good experience, then a bad experience, reviews are balanced out. I know things happen and generally I give the company the benefit of the doubt. However, in this case, EcoBuild’s behavior and performance was so bad, nothing could bring it above 1 star. The company was hired to replace a window, install new drywall on a ceiling and wall and replace some trim. My initial project manager Jeff (who quit before everything went down hill) was responsive knowledgeable and very friendly. When Jeff left, everything started going down hill. My next project manager was Jeremy who was probably the worst person I have ever dealt with at a company in my entire life. For the weeks leading up to the project, getting a straight answer from him was impossible. I would ask him 3 or 4 questions and consider myself lucky if he half replied to one of them. In no less than 10 attempts I could never get a confirmation whether the correct window was ordered. It got so bad that just before work was to begin, I called the company and said I would cancel the project if he was my project manager any longer. Jeff came out and said Mike would take over. Mike is a nice person but very overwhelmed. I can only imagine it is due to conducting damage control for shoddy work. On the first day, the crew showed up without a window. In fact, they didn’t have any materials or even a truck to carry materials. They left for Home Depot and several hours later showed up with the materials strapped to the roof of a SUV. I was very busy with meetings that day so the crew installed the drywall and I didn’t give it a detailed look until they left. I was in shock! There wasn’t a single full sheet! They cut every piece of drywall and there were gaps that ranged between 1/2” to over 1 inch between the sheets and the walls. They actually cut the drywall around the baseboard trim rather than removing it! Clearly the crew had never hung drywall before. Ultimately, I had them remove all of the drywall; no amount of taping and muding was going to make that look good. The window was the only remaining item and I was hesitant on even having them do that work, but they agreed to send Mike (the previous carpenter) out to install it. As mentioned earlier, I still didn’t have confirmation it was the right window. The next day Mike showed up with… you guessed it Jeremy. Mike was pleasant as usual and just before demo was to begin I asked to confirm the correct window was ordered. We walked downstairs. The window was in Jermey’s truck so I walked over while Mike did something else. To my surprise, Jeremy said “stay the **** away from my truck.” That was the final straw. I asked them to leave after a very heated screaming match in the middle of the parking lot. Management Is totally inept and made no effort to reach out despite several calls and emails describing my bad experience. I suspect there must be so many that there just isn’t time to address all the complaints. I still haven’t received my money back. Not only is this company totally incompetent, but I classify them as thieves for stealing my money. At best, they must be hiring their labor off the street without any reference checks. At worst, this is their regular crew. If you want to take a risk and hire them, at least insist you make the deposit on a credit card so you can dispute it."

Knowing how long your existing HVAC units can last is essential to determine if you need a repair or replacement. Typically, most modern air conditioning units can last between 15 to 20 years, and most furnaces can work properly for 15 to 30 years. If your HVAC system is on the older side and you decide to replace one unit, it might make sense to replace both simultaneously to save on costs and future hassle.
While different HVAC contractors might offer higher or lower prices than competitors, the best time to replace your HVAC system is when customer demand is low. The beginning of summer and the beginning of winter bring the most demand for HVAC systems, so if you can, consider replacing your HVAC units in the early spring or fall. Many HVAC companies offer special off-season coupons that help lower the overall cost.
The average cost to hire an HVAC contractor is between $50 and $150 per hour if charging hourly. However, some HVAC contractors will charge a flat fee by the type of service they are performing—for example, an inspection can cost between $150 to $500. Keep in mind that emergency repairs—which are made after business hours or around major holidays—generally cost more than scheduled repairs.
Yes, most states require HVAC technicians to be certified, and for good reason. Hiring an unlicensed HVAC technician could lead to poor quality work, costly future expenses, and potential code violations.
As you browse our pro listings, take note of the “Angi Approved” badge. Angi Approved businesses meet our standards for certification which include:
The owner, principal, or relevant manager passed a criminal background check
Required to have applicable state and local licenses
Maintain an average star rating of 3.0 or better on our network, if they have at least one review
Paying to advertise their services
Meeting any other eligibility criteria required by Angi
Keep in mind licensing is different from certifications. A license is a legal requirement to operate a business, while certifications are voluntary.
The average cost of HVAC repairs is around $350. However, that price can be as low as $100 or as high as $2,000 or more, depending on the repair. For example, replacing a capacitor is a relatively inexpensive repair, ranging from $100 to $500. However, a compressor repair is a more expensive repair, ranging from $750 to $2,000.
