"We are pleased with our bath remodel that included a new tub, tub surround and wainscot walls. There was one small problem with the walls due to the ceiling and walls not being plumb however they did go above and beyond by doing more than was was agreed upon by making plumbing improvements, installing a new lighted medicine cabinet and repairing a light fixture. They were very courteous and the installer even made a suggestion for a change that we agreed would be better."

"as installed in 2010, which is correctThe plumbers did arrive about 1 hour and 40 minutes into the 2 hour window.  I explained the problem.  They asked me to show where the drain went in the basement.  They estimated it was about 55 feet from the kitchen sink that would need to be cleaned.  They said they would perform a whole house plumbing inspection while there.  While one plumber worked on the drain the other checked for natural gas leaks, there were none, and checked the water heater.  They told me the water heater was installed in 2010, which is correct.  He also told me the anode rod needed replacing.  I googled anode rods and found 2 references from plumbing supply companies that verified everything he told me.  They also sold me an enzyme to maintain the drain.

Plumbing questions, answered by experts

Local permit requirements inherently create a multi-visit structure for plumbing, demanding separate trips for rough-in work, inspections, and final finishes. Projects requiring under-slab access involve concrete cutting and restoration, which stretches across multiple sessions. In older Chatham homes, opening walls reveals hidden deterioration that expands the project scope. Additionally, high seasonal demand during winter freezes forces professionals to perform temporary emergency fixes followed by permanent repairs later.

Helpful?

Schedule plumbing projects if you notice reduced water pressure or joint sweating after a harsh winter freeze. Rust-tinted water in pre-1980 homes or the presence of gray flexible plastic supply lines requires immediate professional replacement. Monitor your utility bills closely; an unexplained increase indicates a hidden leak masked by Chatham clay soils. Pay attention to municipal sewer upgrades, which offer an ideal time to address private lateral connections.

Helpful?

Older homes near the original downtown feature galvanized steel lines or cast iron drains, requiring extra labor to replace. Slab-on-grade foundations complicate plumbing projects because accessing pipes requires cutting through concrete. Mid-century properties with partial crawl spaces also present confined access challenges. Finally, previous unpermitted modifications demand corrections before local inspectors approve new installations in IL.

Helpful?

Ignoring hard water scale buildup or running hot water at excessively high temperatures damages plumbing fixtures. In Chatham, failing to disconnect garden hoses before November or keeping under-sink cabinets closed during winter exposes pipes to severe freeze-thaw stress. Additionally, inconsistent landscaping watering shifts the local clay soil, which strains underground supply lines. Always route sump pump discharge correctly to avoid overwhelming your sanitary drain system.

Helpful?

A passed local inspection and a closed permit serve as the clearest proof of correct plumbing work. Certified professionals in IL will always perform pressure testing on new supply lines before closing the walls. Quality installations also use properly sized fittings that resist hard water corrosion. Furthermore, a correct setup routes sump pump discharge to an appropriate stormwater outlet rather than the sanitary sewer system.
