"I am extremely pleased with the work that was done in my home! He did an amazing job mounting both of my TVs, installing the two floating shelves, and mounting my fireplace. Everything was completed with great attention to detail, precision, and professionalism. He made sure everything was level, secure, and positioned exactly where I wanted it. The finished setup looks beautiful and has completely transformed the space. He was punctual, knowledgeable, and left the area clean after the job was done. I highly recommend his services to anyone looking for quality workmanship and excellent customer service. I will definitely be using him again for future projects!"

"Mitch and Spencer handled my tuck pointing job, which started out small but turned out to be large, professionally. They knew what the problem was with water infiltration and how to treat it. Their tuck-pointer did really great work on the stone and brick and rebuilding my rear stairs and he left the place spotless. I will definitely re-hire them for projects I have coming up."

"We hired Next Level Construction in 2020 to pour a cement patio, sidewalk and build a back porch. We were impressed with the workmanship and results. We called Mark in June, 2022 about a gut rehab of our Chicago Bungalow kitchen, originally built in 1913. All phases of the project went smoothly: design, demolition, carpentry, floor tile, countertops, appliance installation, plumbing and electricity. Each team of workmen were professional, skilled and considerate. We felt respected and confident that we were getting their best work. We had access to Mark and his project manager Jorge throughout. They responded quickly to our every question. We knew Next Level would do a good job but our expectations were exceeded on every level. I would highly recommend Next Level for exterior or interior work, The management is great and the workers are terrific!"

"The contractors were courteous and thorough. They purchased the materials and repaired the concrete and the wooden garage door frame. They also repaired my garage door which was not in our agreement. I would like to pay them for repairing it. I would recommend this company and would like to hire them in the future. Thank you for the recommendation."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Homeowners can increase the usefulness of their garage space in other ways, and one option is to extend the length of the garage by making it deeper. The process is similar to traditional garage extensions, but the end product is a garage with a different layout rather than additional parking spaces.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.

Yes, professionals can install new frames, trim, and threshold adjustments for a complete finish.

Your local building code will list all the framing requirements for whatever type of structure you're building. Most exterior walls require spacing of 16 inches on-center, while many non-load-bearing interior walls only require 24 inches of spacing. However, there are also varying requirements depending on your construction material, so checking your municipality's rules is essential.

You should avoid drilling or cutting into load-bearing beams because removing material will weaken it and increase the risk of structural damage or even collapse. If you do need to drill into a load-bearing beam, speak with a structural engineer first to discuss where it’s safest to drill and the width and depth of the bit that’s safe to use.
