Small jobs welcome

"I called Animal Trackers on the evening of 12-11-12 upon hearing loud thumping on my roof. I was worried that I had a raccoon or squirrel in my attic. On several occasions had also heard scratching noises in the attic area above my bedroom.  Brandon picked up my phone call right away ... didn't have to leave a message on an answering machine.  Brandon came out the very next day to inspect my home and spent quite a bit of time looking around and answering all of my questions.  I did not feel rushed at all. He inspected several areas of my home for animal entry points and quickly determined that I did not have a large animal in my attic, just mice.

Brandon inspected my garage interior, exterior foundation areas and siding, roof, soffits, chimney, and attic.  Once he climbed into the attic he could see the trails/tracks and tunneling holes that the mice had left througout the insulation in the attic.  No sign of large animals.  Hard to determine how the mice are getting in because they are so small and have their ways of getting in the tiniest of spaces. Brandon did point out some areas where the bottom pieces of cedar siding meet the foundation of the house that had gaps. He recommended filling the gaps and caulking. These might be entry points.
Animal Trackers generally does not handle mice control, so he suggested that I put several mouse traps in the attic and check them every couple of days. It's impossible to determine how many mice are up there, and we may not ever be able to completely get rid of them, but the goal would be to try to control the population.
Best of all is that Brandon alerted me to a potentially more serious but unrelated problem.  While in the attic, Brandon noticed that the air smelled damp.  He investigated further and discovered that I had some mold growing on the roofing plywood near the master bathroom.  The bathroom exhaust fan is venting into attic instead of outside causing a moisture problem.  Kudos to Brandon for taking the time to figure this out.
A very pleasant and professional experience from start to finish.  Very nice man, very thorough investigation, practical advice and supremely helpful.

"Arriving on time in a vehicle with no advertising displayed whatsoever, Mark first walked me around the entire outside of the house. He explained that any indoor carpenter ant infestation would be a satellite nest arising from a main source somewhere outside, e.g., wood piles, and mature trees with openings or branching close to the ground. Sure enough we found a large tree with a triple trunk about 20 ft from the back of our house with a very active carpenter nest in the center of the divided trunk. Also, there was a large wood pile nearby. These two areas were sprayed with a slow-acting insecticide which would be carried into and through the nest. Additionaly five other large trees on our property were sprayed as a preventative. Then the entire perimeter of the house at the foundation/ground level was also sprayed for the same purpose.

Next Mark and I came back inside to deal with the carpenter ants inside the ceiling beam area. For this treatment he used a cartridge containing a gel insecticide that was applied similar to using a caulking gun. He explained that the gel is completely safe for interior use and would not be harmful to humans or pets because it does not produce an aerosol like the outside treatment. Just as important, Mark explained that the gel is formulated to be very slow acting and would be carried back into the deeper parts of the nest to eradicate the queen and eventually all of the surviving carpenter ants. I also pointed out two areas in our basement ceiling that had evidence of water damage from a previous plumbing break, and he treated these with the gel insecticide.

Finally, Mark recommended that we wait a week or more before closing-up and repairing the beam, and he said to call him if we had any questions or concerns. Since we've had such a long history with the roofing problem and beam repair, we decided to make a temporary, cosmetic repair so we could easily recheck to see if the ant population died off. And just as Mark explained originally that the process would be slow, we did call back after a few weeks and left a message reporting that the population activity was decreasing but was not gone entirely. He returned our call promptly and assured us that what we described was normal and expected. Again he added that we should not hesitate to contact him again.

As of this date, 11/26/12, we know the carpenter ants are eradicated. We are extremely pleased with the services of Shepp Pest Control. We also have a one-year guarantee on this service call, and we intend to call this company for a repeat treatment next Summer, 2013. Everything was handled in a most courteous, helpful and professional manner. We would happily continue to use Shepp Pest Control and ABC Wildlife Company in the future as well as recommend them to family and friends!

"I contacted Tier 1 Exterminators via email about some rodent issues I’ve been having - I live in an older house with a lot of gaps in the foundation so I wasn’t too surprised to hear them start scampering about in my crawlspace once the temps cooled down. They not only responded with a general quote very quickly (within 20min), they were able to schedule a technician to come out within 48 hours. On the day of my appointment, the technician (Charlie) texted me to let me know that he was on the way and gave me an ETA which was great since I have large dogs that I need a few minutes to square away. He showed up and was super friendly, asked about my dogs and family, and then started doing his inspection. That took about 10-15min, then he gave me a run down of what he found, where the entry points were, etc. He kept me very well informed on how he would deal with the issue (trap locations and making sure I was okay with the placement, where he needed to seal, pricing). Charlie is the best"

FAQs for pest control projects in Bolingbrook, IL

Different pest control methods exist to help mitigate an infestation. Not every technique will work with every pest, which is why speaking with a pest control expert is crucial to taming your problem. Different methods of pest removal include:

  • Heat treatments

  • Freezing treatments

  • Traps

  • Barriers

  • Diatomaceous earth

  • Chemical pesticides

  • Fumigation

  • Rodenticides

  • Mechanical devices

  • Repellants

The cost of pest control is $175 for the average homeowner. However, you could spend as little as $100 or as much as $500 or more, depending on the infestation size, the number of visits you need, and the pest you’re exterminating.

For example, if you need to rid your home of spiders, you’ll likely be spending between $100 and $300. However, if you have a termite problem, you can expect a bill of $230 to $2,500 or more, depending on the infestation size and damage caused.

There are specific methods for pest removal that you can DIY without hiring an expert. If you are preventing pests from making an appearance or clearing out a small infestation of harmless insects, you will likely have success on your own. However, if you’re dealing with pests that eat wood, bedbugs, or other pests that carry a disease risk, like rodents, it’s always worth it to call a pest professional to help you.

Even if you’re not immediately showing signs of pests, it’s a good idea to get into the habit of routine pest control. This should be done yearly, quarterly, bi-monthly, or monthly, depending on your location and if any signs of infestation are already present. For example, if you live by water, you might experience more pests in the spring and summer than someone who lives in a dry climate. Discuss treatment options with your pest professional to determine a suitable schedule for you and your home.

While not every infestation is preventable, there are some actions you can take to minimize the risk of running into these pests in your home. These actions include:

  • Keeping your home tidy. This includes vacuuming regularly, sanitizing your kitchen, storing food in airtight containers, disposing garbage regularly, and keeping your home clutter-free.

  • Deep clean at least twice a year. Deep cleaning neglected crevices and corners of your home can help prevent breeding grounds from forming.

  • Repairing your home when needed. If your home has cracks or holes, you have an open invitation for pests to come in. Remove any standing water and seal any gaps in your floors, walls, and foundation.

  • Cleaning up your yard. Keep shrubbery and branches well-trimmed and away from your home. Remove fallen leaves and other debris.

  • Be smart with storage. If you use firewood, store it away from the home (at least 20 feet away if possible) and off of the ground.
