"Kevin was super friendly and knowledgeable when it came to our repair. We had a pocket door that was stuck shut and he was able to open it, do the repair, and even found why it was so creaky and fixed that issue. What I loved most is that he made sure he worked in a clean manner and even tidied up before he left. Will be recommending the handy veteran to my friends, family, and clients."

Small jobs welcome

"I first contacted Ed’s Drywall on Thursday 11/3 looking for a small project in our garage. Ed gave us a reasonable estimate on Friday. I needed to move stuff to allow his installers to get to the walls. I was ready on Wednesday 11/9. Ed completed the project today, Friday 11/11. He was on time, cleaned up and did a really nice job. It was a great experience. I highly recommend him!"

"Fabulous experience. Started with a bathroom remodel and was so pleased with the outcome and their professionalism, high quality of work, promptness, recommendations, communication and desire to please so hired them again for the other bathroom remodel. That was also a terrific experience so continued hiring them to fixing problems in other rooms in addition to handy men type projects around the house plus painting and wall paper removal. They did a wonderful update of our kitchen and powder room and offered wonderful recommendations that kept the costs down. We had internal storm damage to the upstairs/garage and when I called for help, Andy had his crew at our home the next day to begin fixing the damage. The more we used their services the more pleased we became. Praise their work ethics, honesty, great advice and that they treated our home with respect and care while working in it. Scott is amazing, he cares so much about the quality of his work. His tile work is just beautiful, a real artist. EJ took ugly bumpy walls and sagging ceilings and made them beautiful. It was great having all of the crew in our home. Everyone was wonderful. Ginger gives great decorating advice, working within our budget. Andy is very responsive and someone we trust."

"Eduardo and his crew amazed me with the professional work they did to dry wall my large basement ceilings and walls. I had very complex ceiling framing done due to a lot of pipes and vents and was worried that dry walling will be a challenge. Sure enough Luviano's delivered with quality, speed and professionalism. I was so impressed with them that I extended their service to include priming/painting the walls and ceilings and install vinyl floor planks with underlayment , new doors and trim throughout my basement, they did it all. I wish Home adviser one day can add a feature to include some photos. Those guys are up to a great future. I will hire them again for anything that they're capable of doing. As other reviews mentioned, they're super prompt and can start super early to complete the work efficiently. Look no further, this is great value for the money and a rare find !!"

Wall Repair questions, answered by experts

A retaining wall can only function as a fence if it’s high enough on all sides to prevent someone from accidentally falling into the pool. However, most retaining walls retain dirt, which means their purpose is not related to safety. There would need to be nothing on the other side of the wall for it to be considered a fence, but in that case, it wouldn’t retain anything and would cease to be a retaining wall.

Generally, a railroad tie retaining wall consisting of a single line of ties should be between 3 and 4 feet tall—and the height often tops out at around 6 feet. You can go taller, but you may need additional footings and reinforcements, including a second layer of railroad ties to support the added weight of the soil it’s holding back.

Sand and gravel are two suitable options for filling behind a retaining wall. If you’re building your own retaining wall, you’ll complete this part of the process—known as backfilling—after you finish laying the blocks. Make sure not to skip it—otherwise, you could wind up with drainage issues, which can cause your retaining wall to collapse.

Small retaining walls still require a foundation of some kind, typically a concrete footing. This helps to ensure the wall is structurally sound and prevents the ground from shifting over time, especially during those winter freeze/thaw cycles. The footing helps spread the weight of the wall and the load it carries over a larger area of the ground, thus assisting with stability. This is true of small retaining walls, larger rock garden walls, and the like.

Most retaining wall installations can be finished in one to three weeks, but the timeline varies based on factors like wall size and material. The local climate and major weather events, such as storms or flooding, can also extend the project's timeline, as can any holds ups in the permitting process.
